I think it's a current trend brought on by more and more people in the LGBT community on Prep. It's not a defense against anything other than HIV, often language barriers and or lack of real information and other factors seem to have caused it with some people thinking it covers you for everything. I've been on prep 4 years since dating a trans girl in my private life, we were in the swingers lifestyle a bit.  

While on it you're supposed to have a full panel of STD tests every 3 months. If you catch any STD, you're supposed to get specific counseling/training and a review of your health history. Being on Prep, I don't go bareback with everyone I see in the hobby or in private, it depends on various things.  

Aside from HIV, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are the next most common STD among trans. Unlike genetic men and women who don't engage in the LGBT community HIV is much less common, and Herpes, the next biggest threat to life, is rare in the trans community. So, bareback for those on Prep, is more common place now considering the worst thing you may get is Gonorrhea and Chlamydia.  

Not that I agree with the current logic, but this seems to be the general thought right now.

I've had it happen a few times now. They would usually stealth me by starting with a condom and then pulling it off right before doggy. It sucks because I stopped seeing a couple of my favorites because they did that. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but I don't want to risk other STDs.

Definitely more common and I prefer it. Most providers either initiate themselves or are willing to go raw after 2+ meetings

As a provider, I love it natural in my personal life and on  camera. Read a report  on webMD that stated statistics that use of antibiotics like doxycycline gives protection against common STDs. I have used them over the years and have not gotten anything. I would never go bareback anal to much of a risk for me.
