Pig butchering scam

This has details about the so-called pig butchering scheme that has been discussed a bit here.

Interesting to not that it's not just a sugar lure but happens on other kinds of dating sites and social media. And that women are victimized as well as men. A bit shocked to see the "average" loss of 122k which seems a bit incredulous.

Of course a lot of this involves Asian gangs and there is a reference to the trafficked victims forced to participate in the schemes. But based on things I see and the comments here there may be more Caucasians used as lures (or maybe just fake pics). I suppose guys interested in pure P4P may not be as vulnerable but the ones looking for more serious SBs might.

Add to that a few through Google Voice as well.  They all follow the script in the linked story 100%.

Of course, I see these for what they are, and usually try to fuck with them for as long as possible by breaking the script.
- Oh wow! No that's a terrible idea, Hon. I don't invest in commodities. (Crypto currency people hate it when you call BTC a commodity.)
- Have you asked your uncle for his broker's license? Wouldn't want either of you getting into trouble with the SEC. (Wink, wink.)
- Can we just skip to the part where you try to scam me for all my money with crypto fraud?

The latest development I've seen is getting unsolicited Add requests on LinkedIn.   An unrealistically attractive Asian woman asks to connect. Maybe she has one or two common contacts in my network (victim targets as well?).  LinkedIn is a NOT a dating or social network - it's focused on business networking. So, these always look like a fish out of water.  How do I know? I've been using LinkedIn since it launched and have over 1,700 contacts in my network. NONE of them have ever been interested in dating (fat, ugly, old) me.

I've never let any of these progress to the point of them suggesting I invest.  But if a guy is lonely and desperate enough, and naive enough not to spot the scam, I can see how they can do serious harm.

Here's a guy who lost $240k to this scam...it's horrible but the guy had to be pretty dumb, even if it's Australian dollars.
