by listening to them in a conversation. Choice of words, vocabulary, the topics they feel most comfortable contributing to, their idea of humor and when given a choice of responses, which direction they choose to go (and especially, consistently go toward). My two favorites are:
1) What they consider humor 2) What they consider worth having an opinion about
That's why I pepper all my conversations with "sploosh" and "shit snacks".
