I had a provider flying in from out of town for a long stay and decided to spoil both of us with the finest suite at a fancy hotel.

At least I thought it was the finest suite until I got the following email:

Subject: Mr. Jeneric John, Upgrade Your Stay at our hotel for your arrival on...

Dear Mr. Jeneric John,

We look forward to welcoming you on ....  As a special offer, you can use the eStandby Upgrade (r) Program to potentially upgrade your reservation for as little as $13,500 extra per night.

...

Warm Regards,
The Hotel

1) Yes, this is New York, NY, USA, not some other New York using the dollar symbol where the local currency is worth a penny on the dollar
2) Yes, I looked up what the "upgrade" would be.  It is a three-floor 5,000 square foot joint with two bedrooms, three bathrooms, two pianos (!), a butler, a private elevator, and yes, FREE WIFI!
3) No, I did not avail myself of the opportunity.

Me too :D I saw this video on buzz feed where they went to 3 different hotels with vastly different price ranges. And the last one was in Las Vegas where apparently more than half of the best hotels are. It was 35k a night and basically like the room you described: 2 or 3 floors with a glass elevator, heated pool, jacuzzi, butler etc. Maybe one day I'll have money like that to blow lol.

They have some suites like that here in Vegas.I have been to quite a few of them usually in my case I was seeing guys who are big gamblers.Usually the suites you described are the villas(wynn/encore) or Themansion at MGM the rooms are probably comped.
Upgrade your suite for 13,500 per night....lol
Just two people trying to have fun and some space in their suite does not need all of that.
Maybe some people have taken the hotel up on their offer....I don't know who.lol

I have a friend that's worth nine figures that thinks nothing of spending $100K, including  the donation, on a week with a hot girl in some of the most exotic locations on the planet.  For me, if I can't get an upgrade with a rewards program, I'll usually pass.  Obviously, not in the same league with my friend.

One day out of curiosity I asked my host, who happened to be a friend of mine, "If I wasn't a gambler and had to pay for my room, what does it run per night?"

He answered me that if I didn't gamble, I couldn't rent the room for any amount of money as their best multi room suites were ONLY reserved for people with a certain minimum credit line and minimum play of an amount that  I am almost ashamed to admit to today, but I will put it this way, in order to stay in any of the best rooms you had to play enough to rate a plane to pick you up.

It felt so good all these years later to finally get an actual bill for my room when I stay at hotels, I have definitely decided that just like with pussy, "FREE" is way more than I can afford. lol

Whenever I hear about poor people being taken advantage of, by inflated convenience store prices, for instance, or, I don't know, check-cashing premiums, I think of this. Rich people are fleeced, too. I can't imagine getting 100k-worth of action out of a girl in a year, let alone a week. But that guy does, why? Because he can? Maybe spending the money is its own reward.

Man is irrational.

You don't just see that everywhere you go... Oh wait a minute. Yes, you do.

For $13,500 extra a night, that "butler" had better be two A-list UTR mainstream (Hollywood starlet/top fashion model/etc.) providers who come tested and ready to rock.

Even then, I'm not opting for the upgrade.

Note: What I really love about this is the term "eStandby" Upgrade.  Does that mean you only get it if no one with a bigger wallet doesn't take it first? So even for an extra $13,500 a night you are still likely to get stopped at the door by the bouncer.

The $15,000 I spent a few years ago for a week in Maui with a provider (it all went for expenses, she was OTC on her time) is a bigger percentage of my own net worth than the $100,000+ this guy spent for a week.  When you're his kind of rich, you're never going to spend it all in one lifetime anyway, so anything past about $100,000,000 really has no meaning in the context of your daily life.

He made over a hundred million that same year. I guarantee you he missed that million much less than a guy who makes a hundred grand a year misses losing a thousand bucks.

As you said. it's all context.

Why, that's less than a semester at an Ivy League college.

it's hardly irrational. It's simply that 100K to him is possibly worth less than 100 to you. At the income levels cdl implies money is coming in faster than it can be spent without actually working very hard to lose it. (Brewster's Millions anyone?)

The press tried to say his father might have been killed because MJ owed a big gambling debt. It was disgusting when he and his family ha to deal with that shit when dealing with the murder of his father. Total BS. ad Jordan became quite disgruntled and disillusioned and dropped out for a while and played baseball for awhile (if I've got my timeline correct on his retirements, lol).

One of the downsides of being so famous, talented and wealthy. :-/

I remember because I lived in Birmingham the year Michael Jordan played there. I also remember running into him and his buddy Charles Barkley at a few of the local golf courses. He was great for the local economy.

The silly ass rumors that were swirling around were downright criminal and completely without merit.  Michael Jordan was always a class act and was deserving of all the success he enjoyed. He wasn't ever going to hit major league pitching though. lol

They were offering free WIFI.

I got the Presidential Suite once as a free upgrade, two Bathrooms, full kitchen, two coffee makers (why 2 ?), 3 TV's, choice of complimentary wine, turndown service. I used one bathroom, one TV, one coffee maker, I can turn down my own damn bed, I did take them up on the wine because I am a fucking drunk. I have no idea why someone needs that much stuff, but hell it was complimentary.

Oh yeah, and free WIFI.
