Went to purchase a vanilla visa gift card the other day, and the cashier says any cards over $100 dollars now required ID and they have to swipe it. Now whats the next option, obviously said I didn't have ID but now what. They are trying to ruin all our fun lol.

and have not experienced it. Then again, my use of gift cards is limited.

FWIW, gift card suppliers are subject to the rule of the Treasury Department's Financial Crime Enforcement Network (FinCen) as "money service businesses (MSB)" (at minimum).

Here is a link to FinCen FAQ for MSB's:

http://www.fincen.gov/news_room/nr/html/20111102.html

And recent FinCen guidance on "Human Trafficking" from late 2014:

http://www.fincen.gov/statutes_regs/guidance/html/FIN-2014-A008.html

I'd love to hear if anyone from the financial services industry has more to say on this.

I had a little bit of money on a bunch of visa gift cards, so I went to use them to help pay for a visa gift card for a dream date. Because I was using those cards, they wanted ID. I went with all cash without ID instead. Tossed the other gift cards.

...try CVS or Rite Aid if that was the issue.  Avoid Walgreens for that kind of stuff.

I don't understand why?  I use every penny of $$ on VV gift cards at Starbucks, for groceries, etc. When making payment, I give use the card first-it will apply the balance on the card, then I pay cash or use another card for remainder.  You might not be able to do this everywhere, but there are ways to use all the money on gift cards.
