I have known many that claim to be "party planners, tour guides, models, and for some of the foreign girls, translators, among other professions. Then they report a reasonable salary for any of these "cash" jobs, usually $50-60,000, and take the standard deduction, which is not subject to audit. So they are out maybe $10-12,000 in tax on a REAL income of maybe $200,000. The benefit is that it also provides them with a "cover" for things like buying a house, leasing a car, etc. They just show their tax returns at proof of income. The IRS won't bother them because they are taking the standard deduction and not trying to claim every little "itemized" deduction.
