It's NOT urban legend.  It works the same with both men and women...your diet, body chemistry, and even medical problems do affect how you taste.

Vegetarians and people who eat a lot of celery and lettuce will have a mild taste.  Cigarette smoking, marijuana and alcohol all contribute to bitter tastes.  Red meat, asparagus, broccoli and certain vitamins give body secretions a sharp taste.  (This is from www.tallahassee.com, but I've seen it elsewhere on the net.)
