An economics question (about NOLA)

How much more quickly would New Orleans recover economically if the Louisiana Legislature saw fit to legalize prostitution within the City of New Orleans (or perhaps Orleans Parish)?

Prostitution has long been a staple of the economy though not recognized as such. There are 100s of "cathouses" all along the gulf coast that operate in their own economy as such. Take Biloxi for example. Before the casinos moved in one could sample the local fare for a lot less than you can today. I guess some would call that progress. As far as legalization, I would be against it and the "Godfathers" of the area would lose their economic livelihood. Talk about a civil war of sorts.

I am assuming(perhaps incorrectly) because of the nature of this forum that you are a hobbyist. Why are you against legalization?

Legalization brings with it lots of BS and while idealistically some of the checks and balances sound good on paper, it will also likely bring a new breed of "she just laid there" types. Think about this. If you have a special connection with someone, she would likely be prohibited from treating you different from the next guy; think of all the BS litigation that might come to be if providers where charged with playing favorites? Moreover, if it becomes a every corner phenom, what happens to the variety that you find today. Wouldn't for say an annual salary of $75,000 the sheer numbers might make it less attractive and drive up the Wal Mart syndrome: cheaper, but not any better or worse, just cheap? I don't mind that fees are free to be set by anyone for any reason. This as you know is YMMV biz and sometimes we buy lemons. It's likely though that if you are patient, you'll find real value among the ladies you choose and where price is not the only consideration. I had a delightful time just last night. Not the highest, but not the budget types who are most often hit or miss in my area. My perspective. Yours?

It seems to work fine in the places that the hobby is legal, which happens to be most of the rest of the world. Costa Rica is a place that comes to mind, for a fraction of what it costs in the US you can get a gorgeous woman to rock your world, just the opposite of the "she just laid there" syndrome thaat you describe.

I agree, this is a YMMV biz and legalization will not change that, but I also believe that a legal hobby would increase variety, not decrease it.

...the extra tourist revenue resulting therefrom, would probably amount to about an eyedropper's worth in a bucketfull of economic need.  And you'd need a rowboat to get to the brothels, too!
