I have also visited hostesses who had their pets on the premises.  I like most animals, but not as part of the activities.  I enjoy playing with the doggies and the pussies but have not yet encountered a vicious attack or guard dog as a pet. The tropical fish were amazing but kind of oblivious to what she and I were doing ... I think.

The "therapy animal" scam is an insult to those who have legitimate needs for a service animal.  A lot of places are cracking down and complying with the health code laws.  A letter from a doctor (on-line or real MD) saying that little Poopsie is needed to prevent someone's anxiety attack in a restaurant or hospital is no longer acceptable. Airlines are cracking down, too.  You need real (government) certification that the animal is a real service animal.  

EDIT: My mistake.  Different laws for different venues allow for different forms of certification, including non-government certification.
