I never understood why sex in porn was hardly ever safe sex.  I've heard stories of Herpes running rampant and now HIV.  I have never once caught anything in all the great sex I've had, but then again, I play safe.  I don't see how wearing a condom on film would make it less sexy.  They can take it off for the money shot.

The porn industry had a system to prevent the spread of STDs without the use of condoms, and they managed to get a write-up in the NY Times about their efforts just before LA County voted to require condoms. It seems as though it worked well for the industry as a whole even though it was obviously more risky than using condoms. If 5% of the performers have to retire because of STDs, and another 10% quit because they don't like that risk, it still doesn't hurt the producers very much.

I believe that all of CA may soon vote to require condoms for all porn shoots. But, I expect a technical solution: transparent condoms plus CGI to remove all traces of the condom in the videos.

The risks of going without protection for providers are higher than for porn "actors" as it is easier to track all the sexual encounters of the clients, and it would be bad for business to demand STD test results from every client and provider.
