When an American is in Canada what is the protocol for making donations.  Is it made in Canadian dollars, American Dollars (at a 1:1 exchange) or discounted USD (for example: $300 donation requested is paid by $250 USD)?  Thanks in advance.  Also advice on changing money would be appreciated.

I have done it both ways.

One escort who I saw several times appreciated American dollars, because she often traveled to the US. I discounted the fee to the appropriate US dollar amount and rounded up to the nearest $50. I have paid others in Canadian dollars.

You should be able to find a place to exchange your currency near any border crossing.

Canadian in what seems like most instance's and the exchange rate make's it more attractive. Some do post their rate's in US dollar's though. Most of the hotel's have money exchange's in house. The bank ATM's up there give you Canadian money so your bank statement will show the exchanged rate not the amount withdrawn. I'm certainly no expert, this is just my two cent's.

Personally, I prefer to be paid in Canadian, if only because it saves us both the embarassment of haggling over what the current and correct exchange rate is.

Believe it or not, you're not going to be the first comedic genius to say 'So, yer rate's $250 Canadian? Whuzzat, like, $75 US? Harhar!'.

The dollar fluctuates wildly on a day to day basis, and it's uncomfortable having to count out payment given in US and use a calculator to estimate if it's the correct amount... It's excruciatingly embarrasing to me to have to point out that, by today's posted Bank rate, I've been underpaid. I'd just prefer to not have to go there.

and it was very very simple. I just went to the ATM got my cash and paid two providers (different times of course) in Canandian currency. It was not problem and they actually preferred it.

By the way, pickins are slim in Halifax, Nova Scotia in case you travel there.

I prefer the gentleman to have Canadian money; however, if they ask about paying in US funds, I have an online currency converter and I tell them what my Canadian rate would be in US funds.

The best place to convert American $ to CAD $ is at a casino, such as Niagara Falls.  You'll get approximately the same rate there as a bank.  The only worse place to convert USD to CAD than a border crossing/duty free shop is a hotel.  
In my limited experience, Canadian $ seem to be preferred.
