I'm about to go to my favorite city, Boston, and visit someone, I don't know, yet and the last time I was there I was a few minutes early for my appt and felt a bit awkward in the lobby.  Does any one have a suggestion as to how not to look obvious?

Bring something to read as if you are waiting for a business apointment.

Put on a ski mask and carry a violin case. Everyone will be so freaked out ,they will never suspect you are there to get laid!

And why in the world would you wait in the lobby !

I actually had a front desk ring my room once telling me there was some man at the front desk asking for "a Ciara" in my room.

agencies won't give you the room number until you call just prior to the appointment. And, if your an idiot like me, who refuses to own a cell phone, and left his glasses in the car, you are relegated to go to the front desk and ask if you can use the house phone to find out what room your provider is in! LOl. I got sent to the lounge anyway, but the wait was well worth it!

I can see where that would not be a good thing. In all honesty, the guy had to be a newbie (i hope) or he just had rocks in his head. But I would disagree about not trying to be early.

It's always better to kill time waiting in the car in the parking lot or at the bar then it is to be sitting in traffic pissed off because you're going to be late. I always try to allow enough time for unforeseen traffic issues, which usually means I'm about a half hour early.

I just go to the bar, have a drink and a smoke and unwind. Never had any problem with anyone questioning me while I was in there.

I actually prefer to show up early, so I am relaxed and not rushing  in trying to find out where I'm going at the last minute. I have had no problem just walking right in acting like I own the joint, sit in the lobby or bar, read the paper or have drink. If ever asked have a cover story ready like meeting a client, relative, etc. for lunch/dinner (or any BS like this will do).

I once walked through a hotel lobby when a LE training/seminar was taking place in the convention space. Then had to call the agency from the payphone next to the men's room door, right when the general session let out for a break. I learned from that experience that nobody pays any attention to you as long as you do not draw attention to yourself. It's all in our heads; noone has a clue what we are there for.

...or the one in the hotel if they have one.

If there's a better way to kill time (other than the way you're already waiting for) I don't know of one.

Try that here in NYC and you'll attract LE attention without ever going upstairs!

If I arrive early, I will call and ask: are you ready yet?  The cellphone makes things easier.  Sometimes if I don't know the area, I have to give myself leeway to find the hotel (some providers aren't too good at giving directions, but we do have mapquest now.)

Cellphones do make it easier, but they also create a record trail.   I don't know what I would do without mine.

Here is a clue.  Don't take your cock out of your pants and play with it.  Just about any other behavior is not going to be suspicous.   Lobbys are made for waiting.

It  is  not a  bad  thing  to  call, but   it  depends  on  the  lady. Myself  only seeing  one a  day  I  am  almost  always ready  early ( a few acceptations). When I tour  I  put  at  least  2  hours  between appointments. But  that  is  me just  take  the  time to get  to  know  the  lady  you are seeing and  it  doesn't  hurt  to ask " Can I call  if I am  early". you  know we  want a  call  if  your going to  be  late.

Sometimes you don't have much of an option than showing up a little early.  If I take the Metro to meet a lady, I am at the mercy of the train schedules.  That may work fine, getting me there just on time, or have me walking into the hotel lobby 20 minutes early.

During the winter or summer, it's just too cold to wait or stroll around outside.

You can always buy a pay-as-you-go phone. I was so paranoid about starting the hobby I got one. Not bad, $0.20 a minute. All you have to buy is a recharge card every once in a while.
