I am reading a book right now that examined street prostitution during this time. Just so striking how the advent of the internet can completely change an industry. I did not start in this industry until 2012, so already online. Anyone have experience during this time frame, 2000 to 2005? What changes do you personally see from then vs now? Positive and negative?

But not sure about that. I started in 2002 but didn't find out about TER until probably 2006-07 range. Back then "SW" stood for "street walkers." I only tried that once and hated it. The girl was so nervous, I was nervous, it was terrible. So if you are asking how things went down before the internet I only have that one experience.
I have seen many changes since I started. GFE wasnt really a thing then, or if it was, I wasnt aware of it. I read so many things that told the girls not to kiss as I guess the idea was they would/could get emotionally attached to their clients or vice versa?
Another big change is that none of the women as I recall were face out back then. Today, I would guess it's north of 50% or so? maybe well north of 50%.
Of course the obvious one is that the info gathering on us guys is much more intrusive. There was no RW asked, no drivers license, no LinkedIn, no selfies, no background checks, no FaceTime verifications, no deposits etc. Just references and maybe employment verification for new guys. The one other verification method used then and not so much today was a paid, platonic lunch or coffee. It wasnt widely used as I remember but it did happen on occasion.

claimed six months ago that he had been a TER member for 25 years, but I agree with you on the timing.  Lol

So I dont think he was too far off. For me I think its been 18 years but many of those years was just me lurking as I couldn't believe this place was real. lol.

OVER twenty-five years at a time when it was 23.

I'm no math expert, but 2024-1999=....

Then factor in the legacy users like myself that were ported over from when it was LAreviewer.com

So, it's entirely possible.

about a prior site that crossed over.  He only said it was TER.  After I called him out, he deleted his post, so he KNEW he blew it, but nice try for a white-knight moment.  I sure he appreciates it, even though it doesn't matter now.  Lol

Thanks for your comment! One thing they also talked about was that most gals had a pimp. But not in the bad sense that they were being beaten and trafficked, more of a manager and promoter. The average cut was 25/75 (higher to gal). They also provided protection to make sure the gal was not assaulted and the guy paid.  But yes, seems like it was more just transactional, as in you were paying just for a specific sex act. Also cops were getting a LOT of freebies so the pimps and prostitutes did not get arrested. So a big racket, as would be expected. Very seldom were clients arrested, which is pretty much the reverse of what we see today. Also interesting fact-most women reported they were physically assaulted because they guy could not get it up. Maybe Viagra helped with the reduction of assaulting ladies of the night??

The discovery of viagra resulted in a whole lot of less grumpy old men for sure.😁

then deposits came along and made most of them grumpy again.

Tell me something I did'nt know.  Long knew you're a hater of deposit.  It's  all good man, just make sure you're dealing with reputable providers.

The "call girl" model still very much exists. It gets written off as "pimping", but, I tend to reserve that term with coercion, not management. Not to say it's any sort of ideal necessarily, just that TER and others found a significant market capture with their systems, but it's far from 100% capture.

I don't personally know much about it outside of that, more of a friend of a friend kinda deal.

So I did not actually see girls  walking  the streets ,but  have been curious for  a while, and was looking  for a little wilder, spontaneous sexual experience rather than the conventional, so I hit the internet, and the first website that came up was backpage.
I looked through the ads and the closest one that intrigued me was about an hour away. All this time I was not sure if it was  real but after several  texting ,she decided  to drive  to me. Booked the hotel  and said to myself  again , "lets  see if this real". She actually  showed up and we had a great date.

... back in the 80's & 90's when I lived in California, we'd go to the Mustang Ranch which made it easy.  However, a buddy of mine ordered an escort from the phone book.  Since he couldn't take her to his place, he used mine.  I never partook in the Yellow Pages but it seemed to be hassle free.

In NYC getting #s from an adult newspaper, then working the phone to set something up.  Cell phones were so new then so you would call from a pay phone on the corner to get the girls info then call again from a corner phone at the intersection the girl (or handler or agency) sent you to.  Then up to the location and wham bam ....

I don’t know, but I’ve read on these very boards more than once that before the internet you pulled out the yellow pages, called an agency, and prayed she would be attractive while you waited for a knock on the door.

But maybe that was over before 2000?

I worked for Escort agencies in College. When I went independent I had an ad in the yellow pages. lol Smile for me! Way before the internet it was the phone book.

The phone book ads were there too but alot of indies advirtised in adult newspapers like Screw and a few others.  Its so long ago I cant even remember their names.   They actually had pics of the girl (except face) and were pretty accurate if I remember right.  Anyway they gave you their general location then when you called from the payphone that location to confirm they gave you their real address then you were in business.

I missed out on the yellow  pages. Never needed it then though, a girlfriend was less costly back  then. Well ,at least the local girls in my small town. 😁

Don't you mean the Yellow and Brown pages?  Lol

I spent most of my life between NYC and LA. But it was NYC where I was mostly exposed to street walkers. The first time was when I was 15 years old. A guy in my neighborhood in Brooklyn took me for a drive into the city (Manhattan for those who don't know the lingo). We went down this one block and it was littered with underdressed women. Cars were back to back and moving slowly. Nothing about it was trying to be hidden, so I have to imagine the authorities were looking the other way. But this was the 80s when the streets of NYC peaked at their worst.

Anyway, my slightly older friend rolled down his window to talk to this hot blonde. He made small talk and asked her where she was from. She named some midwest city. He commented how she can do better than be out walking the steeets. Honestly, details are hazy. I don't remember too much else from this encounter.

Maybe a year or so later when I was 16, my friends and I went out clubbing in the city. It was late when we left the club. 2am or 3am or something like that. A couple of the guys wanted to get BJs. We pitched in. I think it was 40 bucks each. We found some street hookers. They took turns getting blown in the car we had. The rest of us awkwardly watched the car from a short distance. I wasn't even considering it, but entertained by my firends nevertheless.

The next time wasn't exactly a street walker. I was 19 now. We wanted a stripper for a friends birthday. We whipped out the yellow pages and called up an agencey. They sent a cute little number. She gave us lap dances. She let us lick whipped cream from her tits for tips. She did a speacial show for the birthday boy. She asked a few of us if we wanted her to fuck him. We said it was up to him. Then, they went into a room.

From about 22-25, I had a few ventures in strip clubs were in the VIP room I was practically fucking them. The closest practical fuck was one who was rubbing her bare pussy all over my cock while jerking me off to completion. But then there was the one. She got me worked up, gave me a BBBJ, and for a few extra bucks, slapped on a hat and rode me. After this, I came to realize there were some strip clubs, and some specific ladies, that would blow and/or bang in the VIP rooms.

A couple of years late, when I was 27, we went to Atlantic City for a friends birthday. After a strip club we were horny AF. We wandered the streets of AC in the wee hours. We found a couple of street walkers and negotiated a price. The birthday boy and I took them up to the hotel room. No GFE. No kissing. A rather short BJ, bang, get off, and they were on their way.

And that was my last time before venturing to online, and eventually I found TER which made things a lot better.

There were a few areas in Manhattan with SWs. One was on the West Side, ~8th-11th Aves. between ~34th-50th Sts., with the major concentration in the 10th Ave. from 43rd-48th St. area. Traffic would crawl at around 2 mph zig-zag snaking E-W (for those who don't know the area, the Streets are one-way traffic, alternating E and W: 43rd goes W; 44th E; 45th W; ...). There were a few incredibly hot and non-skanky SWs but most were less desirable. If you couldn't pull over to negotiate on your first pass, you had to snake around and hope to find her again.
.
Another area was on the East side, Park Ave. to 2nd Ave. and maybe 22nd St. to 32nd St.. Same zig-zagging process.
.
I'm trying to remember some other areas where I saw SWs concentrated but I was usually more "through traffic," not window shopping, and I can't get a good fix as many landmarks are no longer there.

There was definately more action on the Westside, 9th/10th avenues, but there was some on the Eastside as well. The Times Square area was the only location I recall it being more in the middle. It's crazy to think how bad Times Square had gotten back then, and to see what it is now. As much as I do not like who Giuliani is now, his run as mayor really did clean up a lot of NYC.

A friend of mine served in the early 60s, whence an amatory shore visit was known as "drawing a f*ck." In terms of wording, think of "drawing" a pail of water.

Soldiers were warned to wear "safes" (condoms) , otherwise they'd be f*cking the whole 6th Fleet!

I continue to be amazed at how there are guys here who don't think it's appropriate to spell out FUCK.

Maybe it's just me.

I'm amazed you're amazed.

Never really hit the streets…before TER and p411 there was a publication called Creative Loafing in most mid populated areas as well as larger metropolitan areas.  Personals in the back of publication were always legit but short lived! Had many good times. Since I traveled a great deal to several cities in the Deep South and East Coast, I could always find reputable service agencies.  Most of the nice ladies I saw during this time frame offered GFE, and I had several regulars.  Thanks for this thread….it has brought back many pleasant memories!

I lived in the Polk Gulch. It was a smorgasbord of action bounded by Post, Larkin, Sutter & Polk St. Amazing variety of action of all three genders.

There was also the Capp Street stroll in the Inner Mission.

There is no good substitute for street action. I enjoy going to counties where it's still legal and thriving. A thirty second face to face conversation tells you more about someone than hundreds of third party reviews.

The Internet killed street action in US cities by Karen's pressuring LE to suppress it.
