In the latest episode of Law and Order SVU they called hookers, hookers and prostitutes, prostitutes. OMG where is the outrage and angst against a liberal media outlet calling you what you are? I didn't hear the word courtesan or escort once.

...what went right over your head is that the story was based on a real three-time Olympian who later became  a provider in Las Vegas and even had a TER profile.  She also claimed to be bipolar.

You know, in Moby Dick, Queequeg is called a "cannobal," because, well, he did admit to eating his slain enemies as the rest of his (fictional) people did. And because his religion is a form of animism, and he consults Yojo, a carved figure which dangles from a strap around his neck, Starbuck calls him a "Pagan." Also, Ishmael refers to Queequeg's period of fasting and total silence as his "Ramadan," even though the "savage" is no more Muslim than he is Christian.

Today, all of these terms are indeed terms we might want to avoid in diverse company, but they portray the way people dealt with each other in Melville's day. So outrage is a bit much to ask in fiction.

Be thankful for your own enlightened sensitivity gained as a hobbyist in good standing with providers and your fellow hobbyists alike. But literature and drama reflect the speech of characters who sometimes lack such a polite awareness. An oh, the "liberal media" is usually used to refer to news and documentaries with a left-of-ultra-right POV. Not television shows.

But it was a good question. That is how we learn, isn't it.

You shouldn't be surprised. It seems like most everyone here takes things so fucking literally.

I had thought Moby Dick was about a guy with a whale of an ED problem

The subject of the Law & Order episode ran close to me in a marathon a few years back.  Realistically we could have met that very evening after the race!  If only I knew.......

I don't think she was bi polar seriously, just tired of her boring suburban life being the "disney good girl". Then got caught, lost endorsements and had to say something to keep her husband from leaving...

I know the story. The point is it doesn't matter who she was. She was a hooker. Obviously the point went over your head. If you take money for sex you are a hooker and even politically correct NBC got that right.
