I ran into this and wathced the video clip a min ago. Don't know all the facts as i don't remember anything about this from the late 90s, but for some reason it rubbed me the wrong way.

Maybe because i feel for the kids involved even though i am not a parent. Just pissed me off.

...most women cannot even get protection from abusive husbands or boyfriends!  Well, gotta get back to watching the networks' "all funeral-all the time!".  OK, that's another topic for the 'other' board.

This would be a great time for the "religious right" to step in and start protesting that the government is against the institution of marriage. The ACLU could sue for the couples "loss of consortium(sp?)". The irony would be delicious and the heat created for the corrections department is just what their already stretched budget needs.

 It would serve the US government and "we the people" well if our elected leaders would read the constitution and its documented limitations to government intervention & authority.

The Federal government is totally out of whack. It is not government of, for or by the people. It is governnment for professional politicians and professional bureaucrats. The Federal government has no concept of civil liberties, the constitution or even common sense, yet too many people are still ranting for more government. For many years people have clamored for bigger government and what they got is a Federal government that is obese, abusive, and intrusive; a tyranny.
