Way back in the eighties, I took the EST training. Not to get into the whole deal about whether EST is good or not, but I only mention it to relate one aphorism from it that has always stayed with me. That was: "Understanding is the booby prize."
And so it is with religion and the attempts to understand how existence came into being and who is God and on and on.
It doesn't matter, so I guess that makes me the Apatatheist, except that I do care about the role each of us plays viz a viz the rest of mankind.
I wish religion would put a tenth of the resources that it has put into the boring questions that don't matter (transsubstantiation, give me a break!) and instead figure out how we can love one another before mankind anihilates himself.

Mark Twain, George Carlin, Bill Maher all have/had routines mocking organized religion.
Someone once pointed out to me that people who disdain religious extremists don't realize that the extremists are the genuine believers. The Bible [I've never read the Koran but I think it applies here too], does not make exceptions. You are to follow all the rules. Period. There is no loophole for changing historical circumstances or a special class of people who get to pick and choose.
Most people, unknowingly, derive their morality and rationality from the secular worlds of science and democracy. Anyone who genuinely believed in the Bible would be a dangerous person. According to Deuterononomy we should execute disobedient children. Someone please point out to me any sign that this passage is meant ironically or humorously. Also point out where we are free to disobey this or any other passage.
