What would happen if providers and/or hobbyists organized to form a charity and gave to causes like homeless children, battered women, etc. and did so very vocally...i.e., let the world know that we're caring human beings, not perverts and drug addicts...

Who'll take the initiative?

Look at how the "Love Ride" has worked to everybodies benefit in LA.

I believe Nikki Avalon has an educator's discount but I'm going from memory and I haven't had my apple this morning.  There are ladies who have started your premise, my wise Turkana!  Advanced thinkers.  I'm sure there are other ladies as well...

It will also have the effect of giving the community more pride of its own.  

The challenge that would have to be met, though, is how to do this while maintaining the quasi-secret status that the hobby has to have?  I mean, hardly any of us can be identified with such an organization by our real names.

And this does present other troubles.  Even a charity that has such secretiveness is bound to raise as much suspicion as thanks for its beneficiance.
