If you receive a text similar to this one, my suspicion is that this is an attempt to extort money from us by frightening us...  I received this on my phone as a text message today.  I had heard earlier today of another TER member who received a similar text and included his name in the body of the text.

Here is the text in full:

"My name is Edward from Exposing Johns, an online organization that investigates, identifies and publicize the conduct of adults who solicit prostitutes for sex online.  Your name and phone number were reported by prostitutes and female escorts you had solicited for so we hereby reporting to the police as a sex offender, press charges and you might appear before a judge to defend these charges.  Please reply is you want all these charges dropped."  The errors in the text are intentionally left in.

If you contact this person, they will ask you for a fee to clear your name.  This is similar to a website that does the same thing.  The errors suggest to me someone who does not speak English as a primary language.

Don't fall for it!  Don't take the bate!

Have a good one gentlemen!

Wow... I hadn't yet heard of this scam.  I really hope a "john" soon threatens them back.... "I know this is a scam, and I have already consulted my attorney about suing you for extortion, among other crimes."

I'm really concerned about where they're getting phone numbers.

Yes, I've recently been getting that call a lot. I've begun telling them that there's someone at my door and I'll be right back. Then I just set the phone down and go about whatever I was doing when they interrupted. Sooner or later they get the hint. Jerks! Regards.....RR

They used the same technique and pretended to be IRS wanted you to send them a money order or a credit card number. I called them back and asked lot of questions and at the end told them the IRS agents are on the way to apprehend them. I could hear the scramble in the background. They were speaking some African language so, couldn't understand a work but the Phone went silent.

One NEVER EVER divulges or uses real name while hobbying. If real name is any way shape or form to be used in the name (pun intended) of screening then say fuck it! If real CC or any monetary instruments bearing real name is asked also say fuck it!

Even if your ATF is completely honest and trustworthy there's no guarantee somebody won't hack her phone or database.

In a similar note, when I first heard about Ashley Madison I was very intrigued with the idea. However I thought hard about the issues of privacy and that's why I never pulled the trigger on joining them. Those who joined with their real data are now truly fucked...

With the IRS BS.  I knew right away it was a boiler operation scam.  I mean it was so hilarious.  IRS Agents speak fluent English, nor broken English.  So I acted as if I was falling for the bait. I spoke to them in my normal polished soft spoken voice for about 5 seconds and inside my SUV with my Bluetooth amplified SCREAMED F************CK OFF.   Needless to say they have not called me back

site places fake "ads" for providers then when guys contact them, they collect as much info as they can in an attempt to "screen" them, then they send you a report saying your info is on the site blah blah blah.

I've seen reports on there with guys Facebook information, full name, everything

One of the best posts I've seen in a long time. There has been a disturbing trend of some people giving up personal information in recent times. They either think they are invincible or they have nothing to lose.

but in all honesty, I still don't give up personal information like that in order to book with a hooker.

and if I did have even the slightest thing to lose by being outed, you can bet I would guard my anonymity as zealously as any of you.

in the age when companies are trying to link & track all our info.  Yes, if your phone is on FB, they can get your real ID & pictures.  Buit it is extortion, definately.

It goes well beyond sex-related complication. Imagine your personal infos being stolen and used by would be terrorists or drug traffickers. Imagine one day wake up and find the FBIs at your door, or being on a no-fly list, or being hauled in as "person of interest" for interrogation... or even as simple as being audited by the IRS because some illegal immigrants have been working under your identity without paying taxes... it happened!
