Repeat request. Lock old threads!

There is an 8 year old and a 6 year old thread right near the top of this page now. There is a 5 month old, and a 16 YEAR OLD thread on the first page of the GD board. This is rediculous. There has got to be a way to prevent this. Other forums do it all the time.  Here is my previous thread on the topic.

...that does it. I don't know why there is a flat view now that tree opens the way it does.

... for a different kind of problem... one way to deal with this, if the old threads bother you, is to simply ignore the old threads (easy to do since the age of the thread is displayed).

;)

And as was frequently done in the past, you can start a new thread, and post a link to an old discussion if you want someone to look at the old discussion. It makes zero sense to post replies in the old discussion, to people who have long since left TER, and even people who have died.

And I totally expected it from you! It's ok, I'll take it. I deserve it. However, I do see a difference in certain posters trying to ignore other specific posters, and the ancient thread resurrection topic. You seemed to agree with me in the last thread I started about this. ;)

... it's possible to do what you want to do.  Just trying to be helpful. :)

I don't see it being a big problem, as you do.

I think it's odd that people sometimes resurrect a thread from many months or even years ago, but I don't see it happening that often.

I'd rather see TER 's limited development resources be used for other improvements. For example, I'd put the ability to ignore aliases at a higher priority than preventing old threads from getting new posts.

New ideas and opinions might be applicable to an old topic, but we don't need to have the old THREAD resurrected. It isn't good scholarship.
.
Introduce (or REintroduce) the topic, give your (new) take on it, and provide a reference (a link) to prior discussions.

I am not wishing ill on anyone. Death is a fact of life. There are many former TER members who are now dead. TER has been around since 1999. There are members that I knew who have passed. I am just stating a fact. I am not saying that particular guy passed on, but he is obviously not on TER anymore. There are many reasons that former posters are no longer posting, including losing interest, being outed, being banned, and duh, death!

...I'm hobbying much more now than I did then.

PS isn't wishing ill on anyone - just stating a fact.  But his idea about locking threads is a good one.  I saw two providers who posted in that thread who are now delisted.  I can't even mention their names but their posts are still there.  Doesn't make sense.

Some of us pointed this out when TER first rolled out this newest version that bumping old threads to the top of the page would create "never ending threads" with hundreds of replies that would be virtually impossible to follow. As predicted, that is exactly what is now happening and Admin really needs to do something about it. Threads should be allowed to die, and new threads should be taking their place.

You want to keep discussions lively and relevant. Bringing back old threads does the opposite of this.

Old threads should be retained for reference only and expire in some reasonably short time frame. 3 months probably works.
