If it weren't for bad luck, he'd have no luck at all. (Thanks to Hee-Haw!)
The last several months are ones that Smith would surely love to have over again. First, he has to sit out the Sugar Bowl because of suspicions about dealings with an agent; then he foregoes his senior year at Alabama; then, he shows up at the NFL combine out of shape; then he leaves without telling anyone; the Bengals use a top-10 pick on him, but he holds out; he signs a few days ago, and now has a hairline fracture in his foot. Unbelievable!!!!!

I don't it's bad luck. I think it's just a matter of him being a rather large dumb-ass!

done well in the NFL? Some of Nick Saban's recruits are Charles Rogers and JaMarcus Russell and now Andre Smith. Nick Saban and Mack Brown players have a reputation in the NFL for being lazy and immature err not being motivated. Then again what else do you expect from a man who told Wayne Huzienga owner of the Miami Dolphins I am not leaving for Alabama, but a few days later did just that. In my book he is a liar. Players I have found out follow their coaches character and in the case of Nick Saban and Mack Brown that is not a good thing.

Mack Brown players have been Vince Young, Cedric Benson, Roy Williams, Ricky Williams et al. No wait, he did recruit Priest Holmes, but that is exception.

I think Glen Dorsey and Booger McFarland are doing pretty well, but I see your point. I've always felt the same way about Penn State and Ohio State running backs in the NFL. Major under-achievers!
