I've been at this hobby for a little while now. I'm contemplating seeing a pornstar. I did a VIP search under pornstar to help me make a decision. I was amazed when about 875 reviews came up! Then I became amused as I started on clicking some the reviews. I figured for someone to be reviewed as a pornstar, they would actually be in the XXX industry. Of the reviews that I looked through, I didn't recognize 90% of the faces or names. So under what criteria can you rate someone a pornstar? If it's as simple as having sex on film then my ex and I qualify as pornstars...lol.
p.s. Any suggestions on a favorite pornstar provider are welcome. I live in Southern California but get to Vegas frequently. Just pm me.

You didn't look up "porn stars," you looked up "porn actresses," which is the specific VIP search criteria offered. I wish there was a way for the search to focus strictly on "stars" but since that status is often debatable, I doubt we'll see it implemented.
My own definition of "porn star" is someone with marquee value, such as an above-the-title actress or one who appears prominently on the front box cover.
The problem with the VIP section is that anyone can arbitrarily click "yes" on the Porn Actress field regardless of whether or not the lady in question has EVER appeared in a porn movie.
Also, I think the definition of a PSE has been bastardized from it's original intention. When the anagram was originally coined, I believe a PSE was simply a Porn Star Experience... meaning you actually got to have sex with a bona fide pornstar. Now, many "regular" providers advertise themselves as offering a pornstar experience, essentially meaning that they're wild and nasty LIKE a pornstar.
Even Ayana Angel, a well known adult actress, blurs the definition: She advertises two levels of service at two different prices; a PSE at one price, and a GFE at a lower price... Now in my mind, doing Ayana is ipso facto a pornstar experience... After all, she's a pornstar, and you're experiencing sex with her, hence a Pornstar Experience!
I surmise that what she means is that the PSE differs from the GFE in the intensity and what services are offered, such as possibly including Greek or BBBJTC in the PSE and not during the GFE, although that's just a guess on my part.
Unfortunately, terms like PSE and GFE are so subjective it's impossible for everyone to agree on a standard definition. So there's always going to be confusion about it.
Now to answer your original question, to ME, what constitutes a real Pornstar is one or more of the following:
1. She has appeared in multiple videos - the exact number can vary depending on her status (and the status of the companies she's worked for as well - Starring roles in a Vivid or Wicked production certainly carries more weight that starring in a bunch of North Poles or Dr. Fellatio videos - a good example would be someone like Kelly Jaye, who didn't make all that many movies but was certainly well known by porn fans)
2. Longevity in the business, regardless of the number of videos she's made: These days it's not uncommon for a new porn chick to appear in a hundred or more videos in her very first year. Yet a lot of the real legends of the business haven't made 100 movies during their entire career... mostly because they just didn't produce the quantity of product they do today. Keisha, Christy Canyon, Taylor Wayne and new PSE Patricia Kennedy come to mind as examples.
3. She becomes known in some way outside of the normal audience of porn fans, such as Marilyn Chambers, Ginger Lynn and Jenna Jameson, who crossed over into mainstream to varying degrees of success. Or Teri Weigel, as the first Playmate to become a pornstar, Traci Lords because of the age contraversy, Kathy Willets due to the national exposure her story got, Belladonna because of her appearance on Prime Time Live, etc.
4. And finally, how many requests and ISO that the fans post on message boards like TER.
Again, these are my own personal guidelines... My definitions eliminate most of the gonzo girls that a LOT of guys lust after as well as a large majority of the women Bigpoppa would include in his assessment of what constitutes a pornstar...
