Have you ever wondered why we dream at all? The only reason why it happens is because of a curious flaw in evolutionary development.

Our brains are like giant electrical networks, not too terribly different than a computer. The most recent data collected from your memory is what you have the quickest and best access to.

Inside our brains there are various neurons. Neurons are long fiber-like cells, like wires. Their ends are called axons and dendrites. These endings become chemically connected to each other  in what's called a synapse. Think of axons and dendrites as a wall socket, and synapses as a plug. With the right plug (a chemical), an connection is made.

Some of these plugs may sound familiar, like serotonin and dopamine. These plugs are known as neurotransmitters. One of these neurotransmitters is norepinephrine.

Due to a curious flaw in evolution, our minds develop a kind of tolerance for norepinephrine throughout the day. To compensate, our bodies produce more and more of it in order to it to remain effective. Eventually, our tolerance gets too high, and we fall asleep.

While sleeping, the parts of our brain that uses norepinephrine is effectively turned off. Those synapses get a rest, their tolerance gets reset, and we can start the day anew. If it wasn't for the need of this kind of synapse rest period, then we likely wouldn't have any need to sleep at all.

But we do sleep. And when we sleep, we go through 4 different sleep cycles. The first is REM sleep, which stands for Rapid Eye Movement, and it is the only sleep stage where you dream.

Your body releases a hormone that paralyses you, in order to limit the movement of your body during REM sleep. There are cases of people having disorders where they don't produce enough of this hormone. They're commonly known as sleep walkers. There have been documented cases of people acting out their own dreams, and in one case, a hunter murdered his wife while in bed, while having a dream of hunting. This same disorder has been observed in other animals, including cats and dogs.

REM sleep is what gives your norepinephrine synapses a break. Most of your dreams will happen when you first fall to sleep. They will be more intense the more tired you are. The REM sleep cycle can last as long as 30 minutes when you first fall asleep, but gets shorter throughout the night. Everyone dreams, but you will not likely remember your dreams unless you wake up during REM sleep.

What you dream about is based upon random memories. The more recent the data you put in your head, the more likely you are to dream about it. But your dreams don't mean anything. They're just random thoughts pulled randomly from your memories, nothing more.
