A friend of mine went to his final reward. A veteran of WWII. A decorated veteran(POW)who will always be remembered for his service to our great country. If not for his (and others)service who knows what the world would look like now. One of the greatest men I ever knew. It was he (and once again others)who paved the way for you and I to 'speak freely','worship'any way we damn site please,  etc......

Even more amazing that there personal stories don’t get told until after they are gone. I used to ask my father why he’d been awarded the Bronze Star in WWII. All he’d ever say was “for staying alive.” He’s been gone many years now and I never found out until his older passed away last month. At his funeral I was told the story.

This is why I’ve made a commitment to participate in the Honor Flight program. It’s too late this year as they take a break during winter months, but next spring I’ll be there. Another, less costly method would be to simply visit a veterans home or even a local nursing home.

You may not remember, but I shared how he kept the 'marking' on his forearm simply to remind him of worse times. He has been with the MAN(the most recognizable of the bunch)on the END many times.

I HONOR your father for his service.

I took this pic when I was in DC back in April, when some veterans of WW2 were there.
There were oodles of them. I asked this man if I could take his picture. I dont remember his name, but he had "Hoosier honor flight" on his t shirt, if anyone knows what that means?

It's 100% free to WWII vets. They charter planes, fly to D.C. very early in the morning, load up special handicapped assisted buses, visit the WWII Memorial and then return home the same day.

You can volunteer to be a "Guardian" and make the trip with them, pushing wheel chairs or helping "shepherd the crowd." You pay your own way (it's about $300 to $500 depending on the origination point).

Because of him we are not speaking German.

The people I know (knew) from that era lived through hell and came back and built a better country than the one they left when they went overseas.

They not only preserved freedom, the improved the U.S. in 1,000 ways.

Take your hat off for me at the memorial service.

...one of the few wars in U.S. history that was actually worth fighting. Our WW2 vets are all amazing heroes, and I am so very thankful to them. My condolences to you oldschool.

all depart.  I lost my dad, a few years back, he was in my mind, one of the best men I knew.  head and shoulders above most folks, and very difficult to live up to.

If you think that WW II is one of the few good ones, read T. Freedman's suggested speech for Obama to give when accepting his Peace Prize.  Read it remembering Freedman is a liberal.

The U.S. military has done more for peace than any other group you can name.  Even in Vietnam, our least popular war, you can argue that maybe we shouldn't have been there, but you can't dispute the fact that the military was fighting a murderous, Stalinist regime that oppressed its people beyond belief.

I don't know how many millions have been killed in Africa in the last 10 years.  Can we even guess.  I am sure the Africans just cum in their pants for joy every time they hear that the U.N. is concerned.
