...He says the Democratic Party is the “Mommy Party” and the Republicans are the “Daddy Party.”  Democrats want to hug you and kiss you and tell you everything will be all right.  Republicans want to spank you and send you to bed without your supper to toughen you up.  

Mathews didn't exactly praise the Democrats either - it can be inferred that he was saying that the Dems would coddle people with their "welfare state."
