Inadvertently? there is nothing inadvertent about this phenomenon. That dose not excuse people from making stupid mistakes.

There is a certain ring of truth to it, and it is a sad state of affairs. Junkies, and other drug abusers should be treated as patients with an illness, not as criminals. We have billions for interdiction, but not for treatment.  Yes, lets put them all in prison, that will fix the problem.

The end goal is to create a dependency for opiate maintenance drugs. They are legal.

We are a capitalist nation. I can't think of viable counter argument, given social medicine will pay for treatment.

Yes I agree, imprisonment is not the answer. The thought of being repressed, is most likely the catalyst for substance, to begin with.

The report doesn't mention cost of the program vs. financial benefit, however I could imagine that the benefits, at least on human life and livelihood, are worth the costs, and probably cheaper than our response of interdiction.

That's the Swiss model? What do they do with the people who are only addicted to RX drugs

...recently devoted his entire state of the state address to the crisis.  Who'da thunk a bucolic state such as Vermont would have this problem?

Let's see; cold as hell, and cabin fever, and no providers around for miles! Yah, I think I could see how easy it might be to pick up a habit.  ;)

Damn you are dumb... yes I saw your stupid winky face.

"depression" and "body inflammation"

Every time I hear some idiot researcher or news  claiming cigarettes are more addictive than heroin , I cringe thinking of young kids believing that bunk , saying to themselves , " that doesn't sound  bad , my Dad quit smoking without any problems ".
I never tried heroin but I quit smoking cigarettes without going into withdraw cold sweats , stomach cramps , nausea , vomiting ,diarrhea,  and fever .

I've never heard of a chronic smoker robbing a bank when he didn't have money for the next pack .

I lived in Vermont from approximately 1979 to 1983 and the statements in the article all ring true. Even better, read the responses. I moved there from the Midwest. I was more than happy to leave and while saddened by the heroin epidemic, am not at all surprised.

Vermont looks happy in postcards only. It is a dreary and impoverished place.

is that doctors can't ever judge someone else's pain level.  They can judge our drug tolerance level by our body weight, and if we have any itching or swelling allergies to codeine.   But pain level you have to give a 1-10 in post op surgery for IV drugs.  The original Oxycontin put on the market was water soluble and it didn't take drug addicts long to figure that out.  It wasn't the same generation of my granny's doctor hopping.  Doctors were referring patients to pain clinics that were in chronic pain that needed extended refills for narcotics.  I am sure there is a lot of blame to go around, but for me TODAY, as someone that was caught in a group of doctors where one was getting me off the drugs while the other was getting me on the drugs.. TODAY, I am not a victim and it is my responsibility to tell my doctor the truth.  I chose a recovering addict for a doctor and the strongest thing he has ever given me is Tramadol and they do absolutely nothing for my pain.  I break them in pieces and give them to my dog when she can't stand up.  I get more relief from 2 arthritis strength Tylenol everyday, and I smoke weed because I dealing with the pain on my terms.  Not harming myself or no one else.  My personality is the same.  And I function at a fast paced life that doesn't have time to go round n round on that addiction roller coaster anymore.

The moralist and legal hypocrisy is stunning!  Any gamblers around here betting on OxyContin being placed on a prohibition list anytime soon?

When friends tell friends chew a OC or two , it will take your problems away , or take a few puffs
of  heroin , and watch the magic dragon of tranquility appear , with the biggest lie of all drug lies , "smoking heroin is not addictive like mainlining" .

OxyContin is a valuable  drug when used as prescribed to people that require something much stronger than aspirin for severe pain management .
The problems with Oxy and devastating  addiction , usually evolve when the user chews Oxy for magnified effect .  When used as prescribed the average patient will suffer a mild flu like symptom during withdrawal if any withdrawal  at all .
If the pharmaceutical company would put a compound in Oxy that would cancel the opiate like effect when  chewed , addiction would drop drastically and sales would drop .
  I get the picture  .

I was once prescribed the stuff when I got my wisdom teeth pulled. I took a dose of the stuff, and spent the next several hours being itchy, but scratching didn't help. It really fucking sucked.

I threw that shit in the trash. I have found that good ole marijuana is a far superior pain killer.
