Trigger-happy gun nut shoots first, asks questions later...

That there are people who are irresponsible, stupid, and immature who get their hands on guns and they should pay for their actions, then  there are others who stab people in the back.

You’re Welcome
For God and Counrt

Lemme see if I have this right. The gun owner was a well known firearm enthusiast, (per BigPapasan a trigger-happy gun nut), with pictures on his facebook page displaying that fact. Right so far?

And this poor sweet girl thought it would be a good idea to sneak into his house and jump out of the closet to startle him? Really?

having just been sold. And, whenever someone shoots at an unidentified person, s/he is taking a gamble. In this case, he lost.

Each and every single one of these headlines happened only in the last MONTH.

In Kansas City, unarmed burglar had confronted homeowner, they had a physical confrontation, and burglar threatened homeowner with pliers and screwdriver.

Burglar then grabbed car keys and got in homeowner's car in garage. Homeowner pursued burglar and fatally shot him in car. Homeowner said "I thought burglar was reaching for gun when he put his hand in pocket." When asked why burglar would threaten him with screwdriver and pliers if he was armed, homeowner had to answer,

The DA is currently considering whether to indict homeowner for murder. He faces two problems. He didn't "stand his ground"- he pursued burglar and shot him as he started to drive away. His claim that he thought burglar had gun may not be reasoanble under the circumstances.

And of course at the moment we jsut have the homeowners story. Let's see waht the physical evidence shows.

Yeah, having an armed homeowner really worked well here.

I agree, that ended with the best possible outcome.

if you were persuading me to give up my firearm?

I'm not convinced.

*disclaimer* I don't own a firearm

when you hear the NRA bark that the solution to our violence problem is more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens.  Remember that this thread started when Mein made the ridiculous claim that guns are used in self defense 2.5 million times every year, a number he found on the NRA website.

While guns most certainly are successfully used to fend off criminal attacks, my belief is that this number- whatever it is - is less than the number of times a person is accidentally injured when his gun goes off or he uses the gun to kill himself, or worst of all the gun goes off and hits me.  We don't know what these numbers are either but we cannot make sensible policy decisions on whther more guns or less guns is the solution without knowing these numbers.

I'm not a fan of guns, but if I had to write firearm policy.

That policy would be to allow every, and any one who wants to carry a firearm may.

I doubt if we would need any aspect of the criminal justice industrial complex, if this policy were law.

Keep in mind you still could decide whether to carry or not.

What's wrong with that?

Self defense isn't the sole reason for firearm ownership. Its one reason a person might own a gun. I own guns for bird hunting, deer hunting, target shooting.... I have never used a gun for self defense. I want the right to if I have to. I have never used a firearm to protect my self from a tyrannical government but I want the ability to if I have to. You can t promise me I will never need a firearm for these things.
I'm assuming you realize you are much more likely to be hit by lightning than accidentally shot. Esp if you don't have firearms in your home. I have never had a firearm accidentally discharge. I have only seen it happen twice and both times were in the military. It s much like anything else if you don't respect them they can and very well might kill you. I look at them much the same as motorcycles and more specifically sport bikes. They can be safe and if you know what you are doing you can enjoy them your entire life and not get hurt. Make one mistake on a bike that will go 146mph in a quarter mile and you're probably going to get hurt. You're more likely per capita to get hurt by owning a motorcycle though than by owning a firearm.

If he had left with the car and crashed it killing someone would the home owner or his insurance be responsible? Would the state pay for damage to his personal property? The guy wasn't invited into his home, maybe he drove towards him?
In the grand scheme I'm not truly sad at the worst a thief is dead, he sounded dangerous regardless of him having a firearm or not. I would not want to try standing in the driveway to stop him. Police have shot at innocent citizens recently for much less and were never charged. Some of the LA cops looking for dorner should at the very least loose the right to carry.
