As far as I know Putin's specialty at KGB was "decrypter." He was stationed in East Germany and was part of the unit that was tasked with deciphering encrypted NATO communications. I think that internet based intelligence and counter-intelligence would be natural extension of such profession, don't you?
It would be fascinating to be present at the barbecue in Putin's country home following the US election. I bet it included many of his former colleagues, a lot of vodka, a lot of Melania look alikes, a lot of time in the sauna followed by jumping into frozen lake, and raising countless toasts to what probably was the greatest intelligence service's triumph in history of the intelligence. I wouldn't be surprised however if soon Putin would discover himself waking up to a rude awakening with Trump. It also wouldn't surprised me if FSB have already compiled enough info from hacking into the RNC and Trump private servers and have a huge "just in case" file on Trump (I wonder if they've got his taxes and for how many years?). But I have no doubt that now Putin and everybody who was involved in the operation to bring Trump to power in the US are secretly basking in glory.
