I actually thought the Huff Post piece was not only a pretty fair account of what was happening, but also very sympathetic to the plight of the Bundy's.
The Newsweek article OTOH was a fucking hack job, that might as well have been written by someone on the BLM payroll, and I couldn't agree with you more in that regard.
Who knows though, something good may come out of this yet. I can't see anything wrong with shining a spot light on Harry Reid's underhanded dealings, maybe he will get run out of the Senate if enough light is cast on him.

No, this is not “opinion” or a press release from the BLM. This point has been LITIGATED in federal court and Bundy produced zero evidence to support his claim that he had the right to graze on the land in question. You somehow overlooked that the United States has owned the public lands of Nevada since 1848 when Mexico ceded the lands to Uncle Sam. His state rights claim thus was nonsense. Nor has Bundy acquired any kind of grazing easement based on past use. He was given a chance to prove this but presented nothing. As the court ruled in granting summary judgment for the United States: “In sum, in this most recent effort to oppose the United States’ legal process, Bundy has produced no valid law or specific facts raising a genuine issue of fact regarding federal ownership or management of public lands in Nevada, or that his cattle have not trespassed on the New Trespass Lands. “The BLS is simply enforcing a court order to impound the trespassing cattle. The court issued an injunction in 1998 to enjoin Bundy from trespassing on other federal land and he just moved his cattle to a new area. Bundy owes significant money in past fines and the next step will probably be eviction from his land to pay the money he owes.

If he is proven wrong (and according to Mari he already has been, but I've learned not to just take his word on such matters) and has to face the consequences, AND Harry Reid is also proven to be the duplicitous fraud we've always known him to be, Yeah I'd call that a fair trade.
I will confess, I know nothing more about Clive Bundy than what I have read in the two linked articles, so I really can't comment on his guilt or innocence. Harry Reid OTOH, we all know what a POS he is, and if the GOP had run anyone but that BSC Sharon Angle against him, he/she would have won in a landslide.
FWIW I would never accuse Mari of outright lying to make his case, unlike many here, but the ambulance chaser in him makes it entirely possible that he has told either half truths or made "lies by omission" in order to bolster his argument. it's also possible that he is telling the 100% truth, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
This is an state rights issue. Just pay the fucking grazing tax fee, end of story!

Well the news reports I had heard sounded like they glossed over "how we got here". It sounded like he was making kind of a contrived argument about who was in charge of the land. Its hard enough argueing with these libtards when I've got the facts on my side, I'm not about to start jumping on loosing horses.
That said, these BLM/EPA/IRS/OSHA jackboots are out of control and it's nice to see them have their shitsandwich force fed to them, if even for a day.Spent time on my great aunt and uncles homestead in Idaho, and learned a few things on these matters. Most of the homesteaders had little money, and the acreage that they were limited to was too small to support a herd of cattle big enough to make a profit. The adjacent federal lands could be used for grazing if they obtained a permit, put if a rancher had a bad year, there was little or no money for the permit, so he'd take his chances. More often than not, the rancher made out, because his cattle were left alone, or not found. Too, often though, some of them got use to winning the bet each year, until they lost the following year. Even then, they still may have made out overall, thought now they were on the government's radar, and if they'd gotten themselves in a deep enough hole where they could not pay the permits every year, they were left to herding sheep, and that made the rest of the ranchers unhappy. I also learned a lot about fights over water rights. One day we woke up, ate our breakfast, and went out to do our chores, and the creek was dry. My great-uncle suspected one of two things. Either the beavers had made a dam upstream or one of the ranchers, upstream was siphoning water off, and leaving the rest dry. Given the look on his face, and him hauling off down the road with his rifle, I think he more suspected the latter. We'll that happened several times while I was there. Half the time it was the former, and of the time it was the later.
Now, that being said, that land is my land, and it's your land, and I'm counting on the Federal government to manage it wisely, for my generation, and generations following. I know it's an extreme example of poor land mismanagement, but just look at Haiti vs the Dominican Republic.
