Should Airlines Raise Safety Standards

Hey, this is a little known airline based in nowhere China. They operate 3 planes. Don't put them in the same category with the majority of other airlines.

Let me give you a little fact to chew on. In the U.S. alone, there are 10 million, repeat 10 million departures and landings a year. Occasionally there are accidents, like one every few years. It happens. We have a pretty impressive airline safety record. If you want to bitch, then bitch about the size of the seats, ugly flight attendants, crowded flights, and the occasional asshole who yells something stupid or smokes in the bathroom.

P.S. There are a few airlines I will not travel on. Korean and Avianca are two that come to mind, and not because of the aircraft they fly, but because of pilot issues. I will not fly on most African Airlines, because I know where old planes end up, and their lack of maintenance.

early 80's ( I was young, poor, seeking adventure) I took a flight to the ruins of Tikal from Guatemala City. The airplane was a prop and reminded me of the planes in the old movie called: "Only Angels have Wings". The plane literally had rust and had peepholes (or was that a bullet hole) in the cabin floor for which to provide a topview of the jungle.

For refreshments the stewardess served kool-aid from a "punchbowl". It which was a little unnerving.

Personally I love Singapore and Air Italia. Both have hot stewardesses. On Air Italia I had the best Tiramusu I have ever had.

Actually I wasn't bitching. if you thought I was, I'm thinking you are used to it and defensive ..lol ... I love flying.
I'm not scared to fly on any airline anywhere including Africa or Kunming airlines though I haven't been to Africa or China yet, I guarantee myself its safer than I95. I usually fall asleep when flying but never while driving.
I love short runways like Juliana and Marsh Harbor for the extra thrill.
I used to know scores of people who were killed in cars and four that were pedestrians and killed.I don't know anyone who has been in a commercial plane crash.
Duct tape wouldn't scare me either as long as its aviation duct tape.
I'm not fat and I can touch my toes and stretch so size of seats doesn't bother me .. and if I was fat I would buy two seats.
KLM is my favorite airline .The prettiest flight attendants and free Heineken..if you don't bitch

airline travel is the safest way to travel in the U.S. The most dangerous way to travel (which surprised me) is by train.

Can you imagine if little WillyWonka clones ever started running airlines???

...but David Kay Johnston pointed out the problems of CSX, which lead to the deaths of some passagers, including a police sargent. Turns out, CSX had not bothered to do repairs to a track switch for about a decade in order to make the company more profitable.

The CEO of CSX at the time was John Snow. His name might sound familiar. He was George W. Bush's Treasury Secretary before Henry Paulson came on board.

Articles like this just irritate the crap out of me. A bunch of people who know absolutely nothing about aviation at all fly into a blind panic out of total ignorance. Then, even when given information, still want to make judgements about something they know nothing about.

I was a plane handler in the Navy. We used tape like that all the time. Don't worry folks, it wasn't to hold the plane together. The skin of an aircraft is covered in removable panels. Periodically, those panels have to be removed for inspections and maintenance. When the panel is replaced, it is sealed over. In the meantime though, planes are often sent out on missions, and tape is used to seal the edges of recently removed panels. This is to cut down on wind resistence, and to prevent particulate infiltration. No other reason.

In the USAF, we called it 'speed tape'. Metal foil tape with a very sticky backing. Works great. Airlines use it too. e.g., When an aircraft windshield is changed, the edges are sealed to prevent water leaking in. The sealant has a 12 hour cure schedule, and if it is to fly before the 12 hour curing, speed tape is applied over the sealed edges to prevent the sealant from distorting in-flight. Sticks in place to at least 450 knots IAS. There's also a 'gill liner tape', that is used on interior parts of planes. Sticks like glue.

I've often wondered why the evening news is so enamored with plane incidents/accidents. Ten people can be killed in auto accidents over a weekend in a city, and not a word of it, but let one Cessna 172 make an emergency landing on I-95, and it is on every channel.

Flying is still the safest way to travel. In all my years of flying, I've never had an incident/accident, but have been in 4 hotel shuttle van accidents going to/from airports. Two of those, people were killed, and I had a broken arm and leg in one of them. That was in Chicago.

Heard this on a very early morning arrival into LAX. "Skywest 2012, Los Angeles Center". And again, "Skywest 2012, Los Angeles center". After about 8 attempts by LA center, we heard, "Oh, yeah, hey, Los Angeles center, Skywest 2012, with you". "Skywest 2012, I've been calling you for some time now. Expect Daggett transition, Civet 2 arrival to LAX, runway 25 left". Skywest 2012 read back the arrival clearance, and ended by saying, "And LA center, could we get another wake up call in about 15 minutes?"

I have not seen The Red Green Show on TV lately.  Red must have taken a job as an airplane mechanic in China!
