50 years ago we had the strongest, largest middleclass in history. The entire world looked upon us as an "Emerald City" of sorts.
Nixon took the value from our money and left it in the hands of the banks to decide.
Reagan declared war on the Labor Unions,
Bush released any tax "burden" from the wealthy and left it to those living from pay check to pay check.
Meanwhile our infrastructure is crumbling, manufacturing has outsourced, the middle management class has painfully downsized, and yet the top 2% feel entitled to never concern themselves with anything more than making another 10 million dollars.

The only reason that the US was on top 50 years ago was that the rest of the world was destroyed by WW2. As as result of that a high school educated factory worker could own a single family house in the burbs with a car and a truck and his wife stay home with the kids. As the rest of the world recovered the environment became much more competitive and the starndard of living around the world is equalizing. Expect more of the same for the next 50 years.
