It seems like you're saying that we shouldn't spend any time researching this topic. I think it would be an important discovery if we could find that life once existed on Mars. I believe at one time, we may very well have. Right now there is speculation that there may be life on one of Jupiter's moons.
Jupiter's moon Io is extremely volcanic. The heat is likely produced by Jupiter's gravity, via tidal heating. Just as our moon affects the tide on earth, Jupiter pulls hard enough on it's moon Io, that it's core remains hot.
The same process could be happening on another of Jupiter's moons, Europa, which is covered in ice. Beneath the ice, could be a warm water world, heated by that very same tidal friction.
This most certainly is something that is worth researching further, because an icy moon could be used in the future to fuel space craft to go farther distances.
