Al-Qaida-linked Syrian rebels seize control of Christian village

Makes for an interesting dilemma for the Obama administration. Will the U.S. act as Al-Qaida's Air-Force. What a mess!

Syrian rebels led by al-Qaida-linked fighters seized control of a predominantly Christian village northeast of Damascus, sweeping into the mountainside sanctuary in heavy fighting overnight and forcing hundreds of residents to flee, activists and locals said Sunday.

The battle over Maaloula, an ancient village that is home to two of the oldest surviving monasteries in Syria, has thrown a spotlight on the deep-seated fears that many of Syria's religious minorities harbor about the growing role of Islamic extremists on the rebel side in the civil war against President Bashar Assad's regime.

The prominence of al-Qaida-linked fighters has factored into the reluctance of Western powers to provide direct military support to the rebels. It has also figured in the debate underway in the U.S. Congress over whether to launch military strikes against Syria in retaliation for an alleged chemical weapons attack last month.

that's why he always makes sure to say Free Syrian Army when he talks about supporting the rebels .

Stay out of their civil war and let them, all America haters , kill each other

But you do seem to have caught on to the fact that Obama is way out of his league where it comes to matters like this.  first he was plunked by the French, now he has boxed himself into a position where anything he does will be wrong. The only smart thing he has done, politically at least,is to have passed the buck to congress. what a pitiful excuse for a Commander in Chief

will of American public, if he decides to go ahead with the attack once the bill gets defeated. The numbers are not there right now in the Senate, let alone the House.. There is bipartisan opposition to intervening in Syria...(and a little bit of Bipartisan Support as well...but not much..)

By the way I don't think we should get involved.

will act until his address to American public on Tuesday evening...

We'll see...

The man, who is desperate to prove himself as the Leader can go to any length. Just sayin'

of America . We all know what his father's thought on that was .

We  SELL not GIVE arms to both sides, helping our own economy, and then watch while both sides, neither of which are our friends, we watch them blow each other off the planet and say good riddance while laughing all the way to the bank

that the talk was to supply the rebels with SMALL arms and ammo.

How come those fully automatic rifles are SMALL arms and the semi-autos we buy at the store are ASSUALT rifles ?

And selling arms is a great idea that's why Putin is so pro Assad. It's Putin's largest export and Assad is his largest customer .

did you see Mccain's townhall meeting ? His constituents were ready to hang him. Nobody wants in another war including the active service . Any boob who thinks it stops at 400 cruise missles is a big boob.

Even his go to savior Clinton can't sell this one .

The only issue now is he can't stand being told no because he thinks he's Caeser when he's really the court Jester

enjoying his roast.. Reminded me of Charlie Sheen's roast a couple of yrs ago on Comedy Central..

...Merry Christmas.  You can console yourself with that 70-30 bullshit because Obama beat loser McCain and loser Romney but obviously you still can't deal with those facts.

Who ya got for 2016?  The 8th dwarf - Fatty; or maybe the 9th dwarf - Thirsty (Rubio).  Or maybe the 10th dwarf - Flippy-Floppy (Paul Ryan) who was for striking Syria for use of chemical weapons before he was against it.

Naturally, you can't support Canadian-born Rafael Cruz because he's not eligible to be President or is Canada okay but Kenya not OK?

...so you resort to vituperation.  Look at your last post -- your goal is to "bitch slap" me because you have no intellectual capacity to respond in a reasoned manner.

And you puke out the name "Amin" as if anyone other than you and your addled brain is supposed to know who or what that means.

...to put an understandable thought together.  Here's a tip for you since you are unfamiliar with TER's rules -- try posting under your real handle if you're not a coward.  That way you can edit your posts so you don't look like a fool.

Now I know why your handle is "Dynamite."  Whenever you post, you get blowed up good; blowed up REAL good!

He does it all the time.

He can dish it out but is not man enough to take it.

Thank you

which radical Muslims support whom, you have Iran and Hezbollah supporting Assad, and a few Islamic Fundamentalist groups against him. And, throw in Russia's involvement in providing weaponry that can be used in Syria's chemical warfare, you've got a quandary if we don't respond, because it tells our enemy's that there is now room for an expanding market for chemical warfare. And, if more of our enemies produce chemical weapons, the more likely that terrorist groups will get their hands on them.  Everyone loves to make a buck!

Oh, and in case you forgot who Hezbollah is: http://www.start.umd.edu/start/data_collections/tops/terrorist_organization_profile.asp?id=3101

And, if you'd read my post, you'd know that I'm not in denial about the problems radical Muslim groups pose for our intervening in Syria. Unlike you, I choose to keep my focus on the history and all the players there. Not, just give knee-jerk reactions based on the latest news-cycle.

Could they have an agenda?

That's not to say they don't offer some good info, on US interests in the ME. ;)

When someone is having a civil war, why interfere? Let them do their own thing. What's the worse that can happen? A bunch of Muslims and Christians kill each other off? Shouldn't this stuff be on pay-per-view?
