The Shia majority now controls all the levers of political power in Iraq, they have completely marginalized the minority Sunni and Kurds. It's only a matter of time before the country breaks apart. Kurds occupying the north, Sunni the middle region and the Shia the South.
If they had a REAL shia govt they would NOT be having these problems... Iraq's new government IS NOT secular, like the iraqi people are...

Our entire Middle East foreign policy is based on oil. We want to make sure we have access to their oil.

Geothermal can give us more energy than nuclear. Biomass fuels can give us cheaper fuel than oil, while simultaneously acting to pull CO2 out of the air and clean up pollution. And nuclear fusion technology, which is still in it's infancy, could make all that moot.
Right now, solar power provides Germany with up to 40% of it's energy needs. Do you have any idea of how cloudy Germany is? Germany gets about as much sun light as the state of Maine.
Getting off oil is not impossible. It's an engineering challenge. A challenge we can easily meet. All we have to do is put the resources into it.
This is an observation of reality. I believe we could use far less than we currently consume. Although we would all have to change the way we live, and we would still need oil
It is an engineering challenge in that it is difficult to store non hydrocarbon energy. But yes, with massive investments and a change of lifestyle I can see that we could get off of oil/gas and onto solar generated electricity. But you better get your wallet out.
That would mean zero products produced from, or using petroleum.
I can't see modern civilization existing in a %100 petroleum free world.
Energy is the biggie. But our biggest problem is that our current system is not efficient enough. Not even close.
Consider how many things run off direct current. Your laptop, your phone, your Ipod. It's only efficient to use alternating current if we have to pass it over long distances. And even with solid state rectification, the voltage loss over every single electrical device having convert AC to DC is substantial.
Solar could solve that. If we had solar, than many electrical devices would be wholly redesigned to draw less voltage.
Do you have any idea how much juice it takes to create heat? Yet how many Americans use stupid inefficient technology like electric stoves? Think of how stupid it is to heat up one thing to a few hundred degrees in order to heat something else up that's touch it to a few hundred degrees. When you really stop and think about it, it's like we're fucking cavemen poking each other with fucking sticks. Why not just heat the food up directly?
Do you have any idea of how inefficient central heating is? Or how inefficient water heaters are? Europeans got smart a long time ago and just heat up water as they use it, instead of heating up a 50 gallon tank of water and keeping it on hand in case you need it, heating 24/7/365 regardless of whether you're in the shower or not.
Do you have any idea of how much energy we could save just by updating building codes to require more insulation?
And yes, we make all kinds of plastics and polymers out of oil. We could make them with biofuels too, except they would be naturally biodegradable.
With the right engineering and the right investment, there isn't any reason why we couldn't get 100% off oil, and cut our energy consumption by up to 70%, while also improving our quality of life.
Our problem is that we built our entire nation around 19th and early 20th century technology. Technology that is now outdated and obsolete. And no one's saying boo because some capitalist asshat is making a buck off it.
If we were ever visited by aliens we would be so incredibly embarrassed. We'd tell the aliens, "hey, we have technology now that allows anyone on the planet to have face to face conversations in real time with any other person on the planet." The alien would ask, "what do you call this technology?" We would say, "Skype".
Then the alien would ask, "so how do you provide electricity to most of your homes?" We would have to look down in shame and say, "we burn coal."

If the world seeks real freedom we will have to take more responsibility for our own lives, and stop allowing our most basic needs, like food to get handled by a corrupt, and destructive system...
We eat poison because we no longer grow our own foods..
100% agree in that oil access drives our ME policy. It dictated the first Gulf War, I think it drove the 2nd Gulf War as well in that belief that Iraq had WMD which could enable control of ME so we had to eliminate that threat. But the challenge of finding an alternative to oil that is cheaper remains.
