Or, perhaps the crowd's response was just nervous laughter at having the very same thoughts. It reminds me of when DiNozzo, on NCIS, points out that when director Nance tells them not to pursuit a lead, and he touches the corner of his eye and winks, it really means, go ahead. Either way, this will be the course for many Red states, because the Republicans know they don't have the numbers, the message, nor the candidates to win fairly.
