Grenade launchers are also used to launch/deploy tear gas, non-lethal smoke, and camera’s to survey an area. I’ve never heard of any police department wanting, having, or using any type of lethal grenade.  

As for bayonets, I cannot recall police deploying or even having or using bayonets, and I see no need for police to have them.

The federal government is totally within their rights to make all decisions regarding which equipment they are going to sell or give any to state, county or local law enforcement.  

But there are a couple of questions I did not see addressed by the article. Does Obama's decision comply with existing federal statutes? Does federal "control" end here or are there doors being opened that will allow or welcome other decisions not yet revealed that will result in a shift towards the federalization of state, county or local law enforcement?

Why on earth would a police force have or need vehicles on tank treads, grenade launchers, weaponised aircraft and all the rest of the alarming items noted in this article? Surely if the threat you are dealing with requires such force, it should be the military that's applying said force, not the local fuzz?
