I noticed that many providers arrange incalls near or at hotels near the airport. By design, this is a transient locale, where I'm sure both providers and hobbiests are coming and going all the time. Are these arrangements also susceptible to stings and ripoffs? If so, what precautions are useful? Or are these offerings best passed over altogether? Thanks, gang.

any one respectable hotel is as good as another. Location is not the issue.
I don't think it's automatically bad just because. Just do your homework and find a reputable provider.
