I know which direction the little pieces move, even the little horsey, but that's about it.
Playing with the Whiteread and Friedman ones must take double the concentration!

Not really. Chess is very intellectual, competitive, and no one who plays likes to lose. If I were to play that with you, it would have to be under the understanding that fun and games will take place afterward, regardless of who wins.
how about some backgammon?
