Unfortunately my French is pretty close to nonexistent.

If you were me, would you visit Montreal / Quebec with only phrases you learned from a French language travel guide?

I have been visiting Quebec annually since the late 80's.

One phrase that has helped me immensely is, "Si vous plais, parle-vous Anglais?"  (Please, so you speak English?)
I'm a middle aged, unattractive guy.  Assuming you are a reasonably attractive lady, make eye contact, (doesn't matter what gender), bat your eyes, smile, and all of a sudden everyone speaks English (English English, not American, so avoid American slang).

Also, it is part of the culture to harmlessly flirt.  As a male, I am expected to flirt (extended eye contact, smiling) with every female regardless of marital status or age (over 18+, obviously, although I had a 16 year old lady flirt shamelessly with me at a gas station when I was younger and more studly).

If you do the above, every heterosexual male will open doors for you, etc., etc..... male servers in restaurants and bars will tell you anything you want to know (the good places to go, etc....)

Bon chance!  (Good luck!)

There are lots of English speaking people as well..most ladies in the biz are bilingual ..have fun

French girls love moneyphone.  So it doesn't matter if you are anglophone, spanishphone, francophone, hebrewphone, whateverphone.  !
