I'm a provider in DC and just got an email from someone with a state.gov addy. I found his name in a list of Special Crime investigators in VA. Uh oh...I'm not going to respond to the mail, but I think I should do something. Is it time to go into hiding? Is it time to change my email? My website? My advertising strategy?

Well, someone who works for the department of state is not going to be investigating prostitution by US nationals within the US.  If that applies to you I wouldn't think going into hiding is necessary.

If it's an email relating to your services ignore it. Legitimate Government officials who are investigating crimes do not make contact via email.

Check the actual email headers to see if the email really came from that address. Email addresses can be easily spoofed but headers are more difficult to fool. If you use a real email program (not a web based one) you can usually find this option under one of the menus.

I've got the same thing, I ignored it. Come to find out from one of my friends that works for gov it was a hacker trying to spam and scare me off to get my IP. Did it say you've been visiting illegal websites of some sort and you're in violation? If so, it's a SCAM!!! Do Not Respond! Good luck!

AnjieLina is right.  A year or so ago, there was a phishing e-mail going around.  (Phishing is a technical term for e-mail spoofing.)  Any information you send in from the alleged FBI questionaire would go straight to a criminal's computer.
