If you have any idea in the world how to recover things on a computer when you have to reinstall the operating system and applications, please let me know. I'm fairly knowledgeable of computers and applications so this will be something complicated. I have done a search for files that I know were on there and I cannot find them. What was on my D: drive is still present. It is only what was on my C: drive that was overwritten.
Your help is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance for your consideration.

There are two ways to recover a hard drive. If you have a recover CD then you should be able to re-install the OS and back up all files. This way you will have to reinstall all apps but will have all files. A clean install will reformat the hard drive. If you did a clean install which reformatted the hard drive there is no way to recover the data.
It all depends on how you stored your data. If you made a habit of saving everything on your c: drive it's gone but if you normally saved on you d: then it should be there and it's just a matter of finding it. If you haven't already the search utility is pretty good.
If you ever have to re-stage again, I've found that using a new drive to install your o/s is best. That way you can plug your old drive in as an additional drive and most of the time you can pick out your old data. When your done you can just wipe it clean. If you do it like this, make sure that you have installed all the windows critical updates and have your virus software up to date BEFORE you plug in the old drive. This is just in case it was a virus that took you down.
even if you have formated your c: drive, you can still recover it, but it will cost you. not all information can be recover, but some can.
there are many companies that recover HDD that has been corrupted or accidentally deleted.
it just depend on how much you really want to spend on getting your data back?
