The considerate LE...

I've been hobbying for quite a while. Never missed an appointment until recently. I had a time set with an agency, and it would be my first appointment with that agency. Five minutes into driving my car, I got pulled over: expired registration. I don't drive frequently and didn't pay attention to my car registration. LE here was super nice about it but had no option other than to tow my car. I had to text the agency and cancel my appointment less than an hour before we were set to meet. I felt really bad about it.

Does that put me on a "watch" list? Is there an etiquette when an appointment is missed last minute?

You should be perfectly OK.

Onesies do not establish a pattern.

Often times the troopers or local PD will allow you to renew the registration on your smartphone by going to the RMV website while they have you pulled over.  Too bad you didn't get that opportunity.

At least you cancelled rather than NCNS.  Being your first time with the agency, they would not know your normal pattern and might be a bit suspect of you.  In the long run you should have no problem.

I had a similar situation.  Actually it was the wife stopping me at the end of the driveway.  Had to cancel last minute.  I ended up seeing that provider next day, ha!  I was lucky she could schedule me as it was her last day in town.  We had a great time and a few laughs about my reason for cancellation.  I even offered to drive her to the airport, as I was her last appointment before returning to Vegas.

puts you on a list.

The longer you do this, you will more likely than not be put on several.

Especially, the more you "hobby"

I am more than likely on every colored list that exists!

As long as you do not have a negative trend....for many reasons.... You are fine.

Nice of you to let them know as DT said!

Did you think to ask the LE for a ride to your incall? I mean, "... important business meeting."

Failing that, we have no idea how far away you were from making your connection: cab ride? Uber? MBTA? Would you have been to make the trip, but a little late? And still get back to your home?

Water under the bridge. Did you get your car back in one piece?

Car back in one piece. Was amazed at how painless the process was. Yes, I said it. Lol. Even the RMV was efficient. (I can't believe I wrote that.)

...car stuff and life stuff requires me to cancel last-minute about once a year, so I get it. I only get distrustful about a client if it happens more than once or because of something not-so-valid, like cold feet.
