I will be coming to Atlanta for the first time.  I am hoping to make it to the meet and greet on the 12th if that is still on.  I just wanted to say hello to everyone.

I'm a bit of a foodie and am hoping to try some of your restaurants while Im in town.  Any suggestions for some southern food that I can't get in California?

Also, I will be doing a photoshoot while I am in town.  Any ladies know of a hotel suite with good natural lighting?

I really appreciate any help you can offer.  Thanks everyone.

Holli

Welcome Holli,

Milton''s in Alpharetta/Milton presents some of the best southern foof for folks less accustomed to traditonal southern food. Dishes like fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, etc. All prepared with a bit less batter and oils (typical). Friends from Europe & South America have told me it's the best intro to traditional southern cuisine they've had.

Plenty of other off the path food here in North Atl.

Welcome to Atlanta! I love your photos and would love to meet you.

I don't have experience introducing non Southerners to Southern food, but for some of the best southern food around try Mary Mac's Tea Room:

Welcome to Atlanta. Might want to give the Wrecking Bar Brewpub a shot. Great food that was featured on Triple D.

It all sounds delicious, but I don't want the watered down version!  I love shrimp and grits and fried green tomatoes.  I can definitely enjoy a contemporary spin, but I feel like we get that in a typical small plate fusion place in San Francisco.

I actually want to try the grease.  Something authentic!  I think I will just eat the whole time I am in town

that you won't get in San Francisco - so you should do it.  The food isn't bad but it is authentic.  Because bland, boiled and salty with butter (and a small smidge of black pepper every once in a great while) is authentic.  If you think of it as an experience rather than a food thing - you'll be good.

I am a native Atlantan - one of a VERY few.  Yes - I do eat grits;  I do eat collard greens, country ham, corn bread and all sorts of stuff like that.   And I even like it.   But I grew up with it.  The thing to remember about southern food is that it's not the flavor - it's the memory of your momma cooking it or eating it with your family that makes it worthwhile.

In other words - there is a reason it hasn't translated to other regions....

BTW --- Welcome to Atlanta!

Lot's of great places.  I was just at Hal's the other night, in Buckhead.  Good eats.  Make a reservation btw.  Welcome to HOTlanta!  :)

You're welcome gorgeous!

And I don't know about Mongo and where he got that opinion. Yes, I grew up in the south too though the "upper south" in the mountains well north of here which is rather different, though it's more like central Georgia than it would be like California. My impression of "why it hasn't translated" is mainly that it's admittedly not very healthy. I CERTAINLY don't consider it bland in any way. But try it out and see what you think. I promise I won't think you're any less beautiful or want to see you any less if you don't like it. ;)

Good shrimp and grits is something not to be missed. And now that I think about it I've met people from out of the region who didn't know what hush puppies were. And then there's....oh crap, now I'm just hungry!  :D

If you like bad fast food served up at a counter by overworked, bored people who are required to basically shout "what'll ya have?" at you then the Varsity. But that's like the underarm of Atlanta food in my not so humble opinion

I have had grits, greens, cornbread and hush puppies.  I love it all.  Good point about the "healthy" factor.

My tummy is growling.
