Just curious if anyone has been to Bali. If so, any recommendations?

and brought along my own entertainment.

It is a very conservative Hindu culture on Bali.  I don't doubt that there may be some hobby action on the island, but I could find no manifestations of it.

I have been to Bali.  I don't know why people go there, that place is a poverty stricken dump, if you are a foreigner, people will constantly try to rob you over there, and I can pretty much guarantee you that you will experience the worst food poisoning of your life while you are there.  As for hobbying, it doesn't exist there (that I have ever seen).  You can probably trade an Ox or other farm animal for someone's daughter though, they really are that way over there.  My advice is to go to Thailand instead.

The hotel I stayed at had a very nice guy who for a very reasonable tip acted as my guide to the island and gave me a tour of the mountains in the central area.

I never got sick from any food at any restaurants either.

I kid you not, I was robbed 4 times in Bali, the hospitality staff was very efficient at stealing shit out of my room whenever I wasn't there.  They stole things of insignificant value too, like one day they stole my shorts.  Another day, they got some of my cash that I locked in the hotel room safe.  This constant thievery happened at more than one hotel too.  Every day there was some sort of nuisance like that.  I think my guide was involved with this scam, because he was the only common denominator every time it happened.

As for the food poisoning that I got there, it happened every other day.  If I skipped eating anything for a full day, I would start getting better.  But on day two, I would have to eat again, and it would start over.  It happened no matter where I ate, and no matter what I ate.  I didn't drink the water either.  I think I lost 10 pounds that week, and I was glad when I left so that it could finally be over with.  Just imagine getting Montezuma's Revenge in Mexico, which is a horrible experience, then multiply it by two, that is how sick I was in Bali.  As for the Balinese people, they all looked extremely malnourished to me.  If they got up to 5 feet tall and 100 pounds, they are doing very well by their standards.  One could only speculate that their food isn't really all that good for them either.

I can't say I had a very good experience visiting that island.  I am glad your experience there was more enjoyable than mine.  I know other people who love going there and never had problems like what I am describing.  Maybe I was just their one millionth customer and got some sort of extra special treatment or something.

Bali is one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Dempesar is not lovely but it's a little city. Kuta beach is a surfer beach for Australians so you get mushrooms and ass for sale (but by Javanese) not Balinese.  I would stay away from both towns.

The rest of the island is like a paradise.

Best  place to take a lover not rent one.
