Carolinas

And you can get work done on the train

The part I dislike most about driving is that I can't get anything else done.  On a train or plane, I can do screening, respond to e-mails, update my ads...that sounds like a fun idea that I may even try in NC!  =))

I had a question about travelling through the Carolinas particularly North Carolina where's there's so many cities it doesn't seem to make sense to keep getting on a plane, it could very well be cheaper to rent a car and drive.  Without having to look at a map of North Carolina right now, between Charlotte, Raleigh-Durham, Winston-Salem, Wilmington....are those cities so far that it's going to be a pain to drive between them all, or would it make more sense to fly ( short distances, cheap airfare?)

With South Carolina I would think that flying might not be practical either, betwee the cities of say Charleston, Spartanburg, Greenville, Columbia and Mt. Pleasant. Charleston of course is my first choice to travel to.

But any help or assistance ladies or gents here can give me regarding the most economic way to travel between the cities would be greatly appreciated.

Rent a car.  You won't be locked into public transit or cabs.

Short hop fights are not cheap.  Most of them are going to have you connect through Atlanta or another hub city.  You can drive most places faster then you can clear security, fly and reclaim your baggage.

Shop for your rental car.  You can pick up pretty good weekly rates.

I decided it would be best to fly around...and walk to sightsee or take a quick jaunt in a cab.  The flights between those respective areas are inexpensive and fast to get to.

They are all pretty close. Just jump on google and see how far they are from each other. Charlotte and Raleigh are about 2 1/2-3 hrs apart, Winston Salem is about 90 mins from Charlotte. Wilmington is on the other side of the state so that would be farther, but still drivable.

On the other hand, when I was in Texas and I went from Dallas to Austin, it cost 60 bucks and took twenty minutes. I'm thinking of the cost of gas ( over here, 4.25 a gallon where I live) and the cost of the rental car versus a quick plane jaunt.

Decisions, decisions...

I have taken the train between Charlotte and Raliegh a couple times and its actually pretty nice (avoid Sunday nights its packed)  , good seats, power outlets, snacks and it took 3 hours.  It was only $48 round trip and it does stop in Greensboro and Durham.
Granted you would have to take a cab to from hotels but that would probably only be another 40 or 50.
Renting a car will cost you multiple days unless you get it one way which is like 2 or 3 times the price.

The train is not bad.  The one from Charlotte to Raleigh is good option.  Fairly clean.  It does make a couple of stops so it's not like the fast trains they have in Europe (I wish they did)

gas is in the 3.50-3.70 range in most areas I've been to and where I live.  And I drive a full size 4-dr pickup so it's about $73-$75 to fill up.   But I cannot live without my satellite radio while I'm doing all that driving!  I could not live without it period!  LOL

But I prefer the freedom to leave when I want, stop when I want, eat where I want, change plans if I want....et cetera.
And I can fill up the backseat with stuff I MAY need and never take it out of the vehicle if I end up not needing it.  Carry an ice chest of water iced down, can bring my real cream for my coffee.....all my little necessary comforts are easier for me when I drive.

I've always wondered why gents waited until my travel day to send in appointment request?  I'm always thinking now how do you think I can do your screening and put you on my calendar while I'm driving?

I never thought about doing those things while I was on a plane!?!  The people sitting next to you can see everything?  How do you do that?
