The surging dollar has made hobbying in Tijuana all the better! I'm not a big fan of the strip club scene and stick mostly to escorts. Right now, we're talking 90 minute sessions including the motel room for about $100! Carnal fun has never been more accessible. Just like places like Chicago, as long as you aren't part of the drug trade in TJ, or gangs, you are highly unlikely to be a victim of murder in TJ. The VAST majority of the killings in TJ are cartel related.
You[re confusing Tijuana with places like South Central LA, and the inner cities of Chicago, Detroit, etc.
I've lived in TJ for over a decade. I know and date "factory girls" who live in the poor areas of Tijuana. I pick them up and take them home--and have never had a problem.

Few weeks ago, got 21.289:1, my highest rate yet at any of the casa de cambios near the border on the US side in SY. I've seen some casa de cambios (with no commission fee) have a little higher, but they are a little bit further near the 5-N freeway entrance.
I saw 21.369:1 once, but it was only for a few minutes as it quickly dropped back down. Yes, I scope out the rates and am willing to wait for ones that are more favorable, haha.
Given how often I'm going, I really should get that Charles Schwab account to get market rates...And that SENTRI pass, haha.
And yeah, TJ is just as safe, if not more safe, than many comparable US cities. Since my initial foray last year, I've since expanded outside Zona Norte to almost every part of TJ/Rosarito/etc and found it to be quite fun with lots to do. Just practice basic travel savviness like you would do in any city worldwide.
