Simvastatin causing ED?sad_smile

I was recently prescribed simvastatin for high cholesterol. Been taking it 7 weeks now. I have noticed in my last 3 visits to providers that I am having difficulty getting and maintaing an erection, much to my dismay. Never had this issue before. The slightest breeze would always give me hard.

I plan on discussing this with MD, but was wondering if anyone else has any knowledge of this issue? ED is one of the listed possible side effects of simvastatin.

So my are my choices to stop taking it, and risk dying of an MI, but at least die happy? Or keep taking it and develop blue ball syndrome...

Would an MD prescribe an ED med? or switch me to another cholesterol med first?

Funny (or not) that you should ask, Unn,

I happen to have a review article for you right in this very link. Extra, extra, read all about it! And yep, conclusions are that it may cause ED.

Now, seeing that I'm not a physician, I cannot tell you what you should do, other than SEE YOUR DOCTOR AND OBEY HIM/HER IMPLICITLY. Do NOT stop taking any meds on your own. Every body is a marvel unto its own, so what works for one may not work for another. Your physician may have all sorts of tricks up his/her sleeve, but it is not for us to guess or advise what those may be.

As a matter of fact, I think I'm going to start nuking posts that provide medical advice, unless the person can email TER admin with a proper copy of his/her medical license. Providing medical advice confers a responsibility - and we're not a medical site, so....

Go see the doc, go see the doc,

Thanks for thew info LG! Just as I suspected.

I do plan on calling my MD tomorrow. Was just wondering if anyone here had the same issue and how it was handled.

LG- I agree people posting medical advice who are not qualified can be extremely dangerous.  I hope you recognize my handle as i am one of the people that frequently answer medical questions.  I am a licensed Physician in the state of IL and try to reference anything I say with appropriate materials.  If you ever feel you need to verify my license please feel free pm me as i do enjoy answering these types of questions from a physicians point of view.  I do try to keep my answers somewhat general and continually remind those even when they don't want to here it to talk to their doctor first.

Dear HDDOC96,

I understand your desire to want to help, however, TER is not a medical site, AND a physician giving out advice under the cloak of anonymity may pose its own problems.

If you really want to provide bona fide medical advice to the community on TER, then you must make your identity known and verifiable to the administration at TER. It is up to them in that case to arrange an opportunity for you to serve pro bono in a LIMITED capacity, should you so desire, just like I do on this board.

My identity is hardly a secret - anyone who clicks on the little banner on the Los Angeles discussion board will get directly to me, can look me up on Google, can see my study I did with TER providers, etc. This is not only for me to avail myself to those who wish to have private counseling or sex/life coaching, but also to show that I am not hiding in anonymity and that these questions are answered by a real professional, even if for entertainment only.

Now, given the fact that you are a physician, I'm sure you are very careful with your postings here on TER. Hence, my caveat applies less to you than to the trigger-happy dude who just got a px of Viagra over the Internet from some pharmacy without a prescription.

I'm sure you understand what I mean,

I certainly wouldn't make any medical decisions based on anonymous advice on an internet forum. I was just curious if anyone else has had this issue. I know most hobbyists are probably in the over 40 age group and high cholesterol is probably a common issue.  Just curious what to expect...

I am seeing the MD later this week and should this sorted out hopefully.

Yes it sounds like the medication, i take lipitor and it too has reduced the hardness of my erections. Good luck hobbying
