Decriminalizing in DC?

So this article talks about a proposed ordinance in DC that would decriminalize selling or purchasing sex...

It somehow seems fitting given how the City's number one industry is lobbying, and it's an open joke that lobbyists are legal prostitutes.

Should be interesting to see where this goes.

Mr. Fisher it would seem like the lobbyist would be Johns and the Politicians would be the prostitutes.  The lobbyist get a favor from the politicians who take the money from the lobbyist.

With money coming from the lobbyists' clients (businesses, mostly) and the taxpayer right in the middle getting it from both ends.

Lucky Pierre, so to speak.

As the famous great philosopher Skyfyre once said "A great journey begins with one small step" this is definitely deserving accolades.

As the article pointed out by decriminalizing sex works LE can better and more efficiently focus on real crimes. Without the threat of criminalization the prostitutes would be more open and helpful to point out real trafficking victims and the perpetrators.

In exchange the sex workers get much healthier and safer working condition while staying fully under the protection of the laws.

It's about time Americans catch up to modern enlightened spirit and mentality when it comes to sex.

I very much subscribe to the philosophy that, "if there is no victim, there is no crime." Prohibiting both prostitution and drugs has only had negative effects. I don't understand why the world has still not learned from the mistake that America made in the 1920s and 1930s that making so called "vices," illegal is not productive and leads to far more negative outcomes than if you just live and let live.

If you're angry and repressed you don't live and let live. You judge. The world has always been a harsh place because people can't let stuff go.

Now they're paving the way to have your dick sucked, legally.

... but only if you're a politician!

I've always wondered if some politician who likes to see hookers was going to realize that the prostitution laws are a threat to his lifestyle and he should try and get it legalized. I mean, if a politician got caught, he certainly wouldn't be the first to be.

At least, for politicians who don't take hardline fundamentalist stances like Mike Pence or Ted Cruz. Those guys are not gonna support legalizing it, but I could see Donald Trump, for example, having hired a hooker at some point and maybe not being all that thrilled with the idea that he could get in trouble for it.

Eliot Spitzer, former Gov of NY and former Atty General of NY during which time he hypocritically prosecuted prostitution cases and surely knows the relevant laws.
.
I was hoping that Spitzer would challenge the laws in NY.
.
See wikipedia entry for stories about his "socializing" before and after the scandal broke.

Ms. Baptiste, it is similar to the crack cocaine epidemic.  No one cared when it was relegated to the underclass and black communities. However when it shows up in the mainstream and on Wall Street it has the collective ear of the world. Why? Because now, it is one of us in the following traits: Race, stratification and social status.  Those are things that the mainstream can identify and sympathize.  Also now, with relationships being on the rocks and a lack of communication in a lot of them, this become a Pandora's box of incidents.   All that has to happen is the best of us succumbs to these illegal temptations, then everyone is putting in effort or at least talking about making it legal. I can see a picture of you saying " although he was respected and was a beacon of the community, in the final analysis he was still just a man with typical needs".

I don't see decriminalization happening anytime soon. The main reason that prostitution is illegal is to ensure job security for politicians. Each time a hooker blows a corporate executive, it puts a politician out of his job.

Based solely on personal experience it seems to be de facto decriminalized already as long its kept off the streets.  Metro PD already has lots of work.  The last serious crackdown that I can remember was probably a decade ago when they closed up all the AMPs, mostly (IMHO) because they were getting too public.  Also two of the best ones were about a block away from the FBI headquarters, which may not have helped.
