Suggestion and Policy

Set up a stable re-direct during maintenance

TER was inaccessible for several hours on Halloween. It has been inaccessible at other times for short periods, as well.  (ping 100% packet loss; traceroute fails)

On the General Board, a couple of people thought that the down time was due to deliberate TER maintenance.

I take it no one else has been able to access TER for the last couple of hours too?

When other major sites shut down for routine (scheduled) or emergency (unscheduled) maintenance, they usually set up a redirect to a stable server with a simple static message such as: "TER is down for maintenance from X AM until Y PM. Please check back after Y PM. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience."

My first suggestion to TER: Set up a redirect that you can quickly and easily implement during down times.

My second suggestion to TER: Tell us something about the downtime. Give us an explanation.

Thank you.

If the problem was a "denial of service" attack,  I don't think a re-direct would have done any good, would it?

If this was a scheduled maintenance issue, then TER ought to inform us a day ahead to expect this, and not leave everyone hanging.

In any case, it would be nice if TER at least explained now what happened, and not be so mysterioso about it

Any one who believes that is true probably believes the airline when they tell you about the "slight mechanical issue" that is going to delay your departure for "only fifteen minutes" or believes their wife when she tells you she is "almost ready and only needs five more minutes" lol

I am with fish and suspect this was a DDOS attack in which case the redirect would have been of no help at all. The important thing is that TER got what ever issue they had fixed and are now up for business as usual. Personally, as much time as I spend here, a few hours without TER is probably a "good thing" for me.

I guess it wasn't one of my best suggestions.

EDIT: Hay! Robbin just posted this: http://www.theeroticreview.com/discussion_boards/viewmsg.asp?BoardID=12&SortBy=DateCreated%20desc&SearchType=1&Author=Robbin&DayFrom=10&DayTo=0&MessageID=883120&frmSearch=1#883120

"Signed in to my Twitter account, and went to TER's account.  They Tweeted they were down for maintenance, so I wasn't concerned anything was wrong."

TER has a twitter account? Am I being bamboozled again?
