So a new scandal at the Olympic boxing.angry_smile

So, essentially this stems from the issues created by changing the scoring system.

Previously, the judges were there to be robots, and literally do nothing more than press a button corresponding to each fighter when a punch is landed. These same judges are being used, but their role is significantly different as they are now essentially analysing these fights, much like in professional boxing. The issue that arises is that a three round fight (as they are in the Olympics) is exceedingly short when you're scoring round by round and so it takes far fewer dubious decisions to have an impact, and what the TV camera sees might be different from what the judge on the other side of the ring sees.

It's one of many reasons why I don't like boxing all that much in general as an athletic competition, and the same applies for MMA - if the fight is definitively won via knockout or similar, then great, no qualms, clearly the better combatant won. As soon as you have to pick a winner based on human interpretation, it's not an athletic competition any more; it's a talent contest, it's a science fair. In the same vein it's why I can't abide synchronized swimming; clearly these are incredible athletes, but this is not a sport they're competing in. How does it differ from [insert television talent show of choice], athleticism aside
