Another way to frame it; is there really any separation between fiscal conservatism and social conservatism in the Republican party? As much as the Republicans will try to get a fiscal conservative candidate on the ballot, they will be sweating profusely knowing that their social conservative slip is still showing, and hoping all their fear inducing rhetoric will distract voters, particularly Independents, from noticing. Good luck with that!

Which is new for conservatives.  The problem for people like Bachmann and Palin is that, while the conservatives quote Jefferson and the Founding Fathers, everything Bachmann has said about them and our Constitutional history betrays complete ignorance of both the Founding Fathers and the Constitution.  Even while she urges school kids to study them, she makes it  clear she never did.

While Obama has disappointed me on several fronts, He stands heads and shoulders above the current crop of Republican candidates being discussed.  The main problem, the cow-towing the tea-baggers. Mainstream America wants nothing to do with theses fruitcakes. Additionally, the current crop of Republican governors is doing a great job showing how extreme the the current make up of the party actually is.  They are blinded by their own ideology and are clearly trying to balance budgets on the backs of the eroding middle class.  

On top of that, the Obama has a great deal of success to build upon:

1. Health-care reform
2. Saved the US Auto industry
3. Recovery Act kept unemployment from being actually worse than it could have been and bailed out a large number of states.
4. While he inherited the TARP...those dollars are being paid back.
5. Ended large scale military operations in Iraq. (Now we need to get out of Afghanistan)
6. Banking reforms...although we stiall have a way to go.
7.  Middle class tax cuts

The Neo-Cons in the republican party left a huge mess...they have clearly demonstrated that they cant govern what they hate. Why would we want to go back to that.

GOP got "HISTORICAL ASS WHIPPINGS" in '06 & '08.
Dems got one last year. Various factors for these elections include displeasure for Iraq War & the lousy economy.

Riddle me this : if GOP so confident in winning POTUS, how come so many potential candidates standing on the sidelines ?

Public turning on "Tea Party radicals", particularly several GOP governors ( IE Walker, etc ) whose poll numbers are plunging.

In turbulent times, electoral pendulum has wild swings; next time good bet it will swing back to the Dems.

I was specifically addressing fiscal conservatives who want some solutions to the national debt. I was assuming they, most likely, would not be voting Democrat. Try reading the post and not give your knee-jerk reaction.

And here's another thing.  The Republican candidates have such hard-ons to get Tea Bagger support they are all moving to the right and pushing the swing vote to Democrats.  It's already happened in several mid-term Congressional races.  Of course, the current crop of right-wing Governors in the mid-west won despite that.  But now that voters are seeing what they voted for, I predict they'll desert Republican candidates en masse next year.  I know, it's just a theory.  We'll see.

There is another issue that I think will keep the republicans from getting a strong candidate in the next election.
The fact of the mater is that the current cuts being pushed, even if they all get through, will not be enough to hit the deficit.
We are going to need cuts to military, medicare and soc security; and more taxes.  People are going to be pissed and whoever singes it into law, their political career will be over.
You will not get a Republican President to do this in his/her first term.  
Unless you get a kamikaze Tea Party candidate, which would not happen due to the independent vote.  Even that would probably not work due to the taxes that will be needed.

Obama proved one thing with the health care reform bill, regardless of the known political fall out, he will do what he thinks is necessary to address a major problem.
If we put a republican in office in 2012, there will not be any major progress on the deficit till 2016 at the earliest.

Getting rid of Health Care reform was their #1 platform, AND THEY WON ON IT!!!

Between that and his huge deficits, guess what, you're SCREWED!!!

Think about you list.

1) Health Care - HAted my a majority of americans as proven in the last elections
2) Saved the auto industry - Economic package costs trillions, unemployment rate STILL AROUND 10%
3) Recovery Act - That's crap. Unemployemt at 10%, where the hell is teh recovery. All most people have seen is the debt!!
4) TARP - not an issue for or against.
5) Ending operations in Iraq - Yeah, only to get us into other wars where we have no strategy and even weaker coalitions
6) Banking Reform - sleeper issue. No one will care and no one is seeeing any real difference
7) Middle Class Tax Cuts. - Loser issue for Dems, EVERYBODY KNOW ITS THE REPUBLICANS WHO CUT TAXES!! THAT ONE YOU CAN ARGUE UNTIL YOU ARE BLUE IN THE FACE WITH THE VOTERS, YOU WILL FAIL.

Fiscal conservatives/social liberals/moderates like me have always had to hold our collective noses when voting for a Republican. It kind of goes with the territory, some times our wallets are more important, sometimes not.

This election may see me voting for one party for POTUS and the other in the Congressional and Senate races. Religious pukes are dangerous IMO, but idiot Dems are just as scary for a host of other reasons.
